HERTA CASWILL
Our beloved Mother and Oma, Herta Caswill, passed away on September 10, 2024, at the age of 73, to be with her Heavenly Father.
Herta was predeceased by her parents, John and Maria Wilms. Mom will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her son Christopher (Jacqueline) and her daughter Melissa (Matthew) as well as her grandchildren: Gavin and Ellery; Maya, Tessa and Fitzpatrick; to whom she was cherished as Oma. Herta will also be missed by her brother Walter (Sharon), cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
Mom was born in Winnipeg on January 8, 1951, and was baptized at First Mennonite Church in 1970. She met Robert Caswill while working at Co-op grocery and they married in 1972, later welcoming two children: Christopher in 1978, and Melissa in 1981. Herta graduated from University of Manitoba in 1971 and embarked on a fulfilling 40 year career as a teacher in the River East School division. Mom poured her heart into all that was important to her. She generously shared her gift of time for many things but above all - time for family. Mom retired from teaching in 2011 and dedicated her time as Oma - a role at which she thrived. The grandkids were extra fortunate to have Oma as babysitter in their early years. Mom taught us the importance of making memories (and capturing pictures of those memories). We fondly remember summers spent at Camp Neustadt, watching sunrises and skipping rocks while walking on the beach. As a family we cherish our last trip with Mom to San Diego in 2019. Mom took care of herself mentally, physically and spiritually. Over time, however, her mental health declined leading to being diagnosed with dementia in 2020. Moving to a condo and later to Seine River Retirement Residence helped her remain independent until more care was needed.
Thank you to each friend and family member who took the time to visit, asked about her or kept her in their thoughts over the last few years. Special thanks to the team at River Park Gardens - you treated Mom with dignity and kindness over her last years.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

We were first introduced to Herta when her cousin Doris’s son became engaged to our daughter. She greeted us with her beautiful, warm smile and was genuinely glad to make our acquaintance. That welcoming smile was present even as her health failed and it will be what we remember when we think of your mother and grandmother. May her soul rest in peace. - Posted by: Vic & Debby Taylor (friends) on: Sep 18, 2024

So very sorry to hear of the passing of your mother and grandmother. I knew her since childhood through church and family friendship. I also taught in the same school division as Herta did. She was a dedicated hardworking teacher. She always spoke so lovingly of her own children, Christopher and Melissa. We were privileged to be welcomed into her lovely welcoming North Kildonan home when we were part of a Bible Study group together. Since moving away from Wpg we had unfortunately lost touch. We remember her fondly. Ingrid and Barry Esselmont - Posted by: Ingrid Esselmont (Friend) on: Sep 15, 2024
