JAMES (JIM) DUNCAN HOUSE, PHD

December 7, 1966 - September 10, 2024

James “Jim” Duncan House, PhD, FCNS-SCN, 57 of Winnipeg, MB passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024.
He was a Professor and former Head of Food and Human Nutritional Science at the University of Manitoba and most recently appointed Manitoba Strategic Research Chair in Sustainable Protein. He was also past President of the Canadian Nutrition Society/Société Canadienne de Nutrition.
Jim was born on December 7, 1966 in St Thomas, ON and educated at Guelph University for both a BSc and PhD in Animal Science, before completing his post doctoral work at Memorial University of Newfoundland and finally accepting a tenured position at The University of Manitoba.
He is predeceased by his parents, Judy (née Elliott) and Lucius “Lou” House.
Jim was the beloved husband of Aileen (née McCann); and adoring father of Meara. He is survived by his siblings, Sheilah (Martin), Michael (Donna), John (Louise), and Tom (Staci); his brothers and sisters-in-law, David (Marg) and Peter (Aruna); his nieces and nephews, Ellen (Stefan), Sonia (Michael), Shannon, Monica, Meredith (Jack), Nathan, Jennifer (Gabe), Michael, Connor (Meghan), and Heather; as well as his mother-in-law Ann.
Jim’s awards and accomplishments were many and it would be easy to assume that he was a serious man with little time for frivolity. Nothing could be further from the truth. Jim found joy and delight in every element of living. He was the easiest company, with a ready smile and vivid sense of humour. His infectious laugh will be missed always. Jim was a true friend to everyone he met. There are friends and family around the world that feel such a sense of loss at his passing.
Hearing Jim sing was a true pleasure, he enjoyed decades with The Bison Men’s Chorus and his solos ranged from the ridiculous to the sublime. Singing Fields of Athenry in Ireland surrounded by family was a highlight for those present. His profound love of music and art were a lovely counterbalance to his pursuit of scientific advancement.
Jim never lost hope throughout his battle and if love had been enough to save him, he would be with us still. We, those that knew him best, are comforted in our grief as we understand that the depth of our sorrow is a testament to the love he shared so freely during his lifetime. We know we are the luckiest people to have had such a beautiful soul grace our lives.
We are grateful for his time with us, however short it felt. His legacy will live on in his work and family. The lives he has touched are many and varied, and he left everyone better for having known him.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, October 7th, in the Manitoba Room at The University of Manitoba to give us time to prepare a fitting tribute for someone as rare and precious as Jim. Instead of flowers we are organizing a scholarship/award in his honour, details will be available at the service.
The family expresses gratitude to all the remarkable healthcare workers who have dedicated their lives to helping others, you were there with us every step of our journey.
We appreciate the photo tribute honouring Jim’s life, accessible through the tributes link at the bottom of this obituary. We also encourage everyone with memories to share to email us dr.house.memories@gmail.com.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • Dr. House, or as he preferred, Jim, was a very kind and funny lecturer. I met him in a nutrition class that happened once a week at after 6:30 pm, so it was nearly three hours lecture. Despite this less than ideal classroom situation, he had always brought joy to the tired classroom with his joyful greetings, generous deadline extensions, and kind reminders to urge us ask more questions and discuss more. I remember one night near Easter, he brought chocolate eggs more than enough for the entire classroom. As an international student, I hadn't had much interaction with easter eggs, but Jim's great idea sparked joy in everyone's eyes and brought great enjoyment of Easter. I kept thinking about Dr Jim from time to time after that course, because of his funny demeanour, useful knowledges, and vast experience in the field. And Dr Jim will remain a fond memory of mine, for me to cherish, for a very very long time. - Posted by: Ho Long Lee (Teacher ans student) on: Oct 08, 2024

  • Sincere sympathies to Jim's family, friends and colleagues. We remember with fondness Jim's infectious smile and booming laugh. Over the last number of decades it has been a personal and professional pleasure to work with Jim on leveraging scientific concepts to the benefit of production agriculture. His contributions will continue to bring value to growers in western Canada and around the world. He will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Lee Anne and Keith Murphy (Colleague and friend) on: Oct 07, 2024

  • I was shocked and saddened when I heard the news of Jim’s passing. I have such a high regard for Jim, not only as an accomplished scholar but also as a wonderfully balanced person. He was always open and ready to contribute his time to meet scientists and students that shared in his love for Nutrition. The fact that his work spanned fields of Animal, Food and Human Nutrition is clear evidence of his enthusiasm and ability to interact with all groups. Hence, he was so deserving of all the awards and recognition of accomplishment he received in Nutrition. On a personal level, Jim was a great colleague on committees that I had the pleasure to be on, with him. He was a “leader,” in the strongest definition of the word and above all made me feel comfortable and included in all issues that came his way. We have lost a giant in the field of Nutrition in Canada for his leadership, scholarly accomplishments and overall friendly manner. My sincere condolences to his family and his colleagues at U of M. – David Kitts - Posted by: David D Kitts (Colleage) on: Oct 06, 2024

  • I am so deeply saddened by Jim's passing. Jim and I have worked closely for the last 10 years thanks to his great commitment and contributions to the Canadian Nutrition Society and the greater field of nutrition. In my 30+ years working with not-for-profit organizations, Jim has had one of the greatest impacts on me. It became evident to me early in my role with CNS that Jim was a giant in our field - his immense knowledge, his vision, his integrity, his commitment to trainees, the respect he garnered by so many colleagues and collaborators, his talent as a scientist, and his willingness to always take time and to give all he had- which was so much. I am so grateful for having met him, and feel so privileged to have the opportunity to work so closely with him. He was a mentor and a friend - and he always made me want to keep pushing forward and keep doing better. The loss that I have been feeling is immense - and my heart goes out to so many other colleagues and friends, and in particular his family - who are all grieving a person who had made such an impact and has been taken from us too soon. We will miss that beautiful smile, the hearty laugh, his sense of humour, his genuineness and his ability to make anyone around him feel comfortable and noticed. I will never forget Jim. - Posted by: Andrea Grantham (Colleague, Mentee, Friend) on: Sep 23, 2024

  • My deepest condolences to Jim House’s family, friends and many many colleagues for his untimely loss. I first met Jim in 1990 when my career began with the Canola Council. He was a well respected and extraordinary nutrition scientist, mentor, friend, and colleague who has left a significant legacy. As a scientist, Jim had a commitment to improving human health through rigorous research. His groundbreaking work reshaped our understanding of protein assessment and health outcomes. As a colleague, Jim brought not only his expertise but kindness and a collaborative spirit to projects. His humility plus his drive in his scientific endeavors supported the efforts and led to success of both large and small companies. Jim believed deeply in the power of mentorship, and generously shared his knowledge and wisdom with others. Jim had a profound impact on the careers and personal growth so many students and colleagues in Manitoba and beyond. Jim was a true friend. His warmth, sense of humor, and generosity of spirit and smile brought light to all events he attended and participated in. As noted, Jim added extraordinary contributions to the field of nutrition and to the lives of so many. He will be remembered not only as a brilliant scientist, but as a person of integrity, compassion, and friendship. Jim’s impact will continue to resonate for many many years to come, and we are all better for having known him. Jim, rest in peace, my friend and colleague.
