FRANCES KOZIN
Frances died September 16, 2024, a few hours short of her 97th birthday. She was born September 17, 1927, in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
She was the oldest of six children and has one surviving sister, Louise Svetina of Toronto, ON. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Frank in 1984. She leaves her children, Julie Schollenberg (Ed) of Rothesay, NB and Robert of Els Poblets, Spain, her grandchildren, Erica Schollenberg (Johnathan Munroe) of Halifax, NS, Viki MacMillan of Quispamsis, NB, and Nick Schollenberg (Julie) of Quispamsis, NB. She also leaves three great-grandchildren, Oliver and Isla MacMillan and Eddie Schollenberg. She also leaves several nieces, nephews and in-laws in Ontario and Slovenia.
As the oldest child she was the only one who was able to flee her home on foot due to events of the Second World War. She ended up in a displaced persons camp in Austria, where she lived for four years before being allowed to immigrate to Canada in 1948, eventually landing in Winnipeg. She and her husband were able to buy a brand new house in Transcona in 1959, where she stayed until almost the end of her life.
She was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Slovenian Church and St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church for many years. She and her husband (with the help of their Slovenian friends) built a cottage at Lakeshore Heights on Lake Winnipeg, where they spent many summers.
Frances left her home country before she finished school, so she went back as an adult to finish high school and went on to the University of Winnipeg, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in her 50s. She maintained a vegetable garden well into her 90s. Her homemade egg noodles were legendary, and everyone who knew her has pieces of her embroidery, knitting and pottery.
When she could no longer manage at home she (after a couple of moves) ended up at Concordia Place, where she received excellent care for the last seven months. Many thanks to the many friends who looked after and visited her over the many years she lived alone. These include Norm Mitchell (whose parents took her and her husband in when they arrived in Winnipeg so many years ago), Louise Page, Marjorie and Jim Kolson, and lastly Justina Kehler, who looked after her in all the places she lived after leaving her house.
Flowers gratefully declined. Donations can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of Green Acres. A ceremony is planned for a later date.

Thank you Frances for your financial help to our parish. Eternal rest grant to Frances Kozin and Dr. Framk Kozin,O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them both. Amen. Fr. Julie and Robert … My heartfelt condolences in the passing of your mom Francis. 🙏 My memory … Our families went to St. Joseph the Worker Parish and school. “Mrs Kozin “ was my Brown Owl in Brownies. As a Brownie … I have fond memories of going to the family cabin for a weekend or was it a day and making a little leather change purse which I gave my mom. She used it a ton and when she passed in 2016 was still in her possession. Her and Mrs Whitaboll were excellent mentors and loved by all. I always looked up to Julia as she was older and wiser.. Robert was in the same grade as I and won the trip to Ottawa as a patrol …I was the runner up but consoled by your mom … lol The last times I visited were in her short stay at Devonshire house 2 before she went back to her home on Brewster Bay which I walked by almost everyday down the public sidewalk admiring her garden and flowers always stopping by to chat if she was outside. She loved her home, family and gardens. I went for tea once before her initial move and she lovingly gave me a piece of her signed pottery… a small bowl which I use. I will always remember her beautiful dark eyes which shone when talking to her. RIP Mrs Kozin. Heaven has welcomed another Angel. - Posted by: Pat Brokke nee Lucko (Family friend ) on: Oct 01, 2024

Mrs. Kozin RIP you were a beautiful lady whose smile was always bright. You and your husband Dr. Kozin were such kind and wonderful people who I remember fondly. My sister Barbara and I delivered the Free Press for many summers at Lakeshore Heights and you were always one of our best customers - thank you. Also as a kid who grew up in Transcona you and the Dr. Kozin were respected members of Transcona and your kind and unwavering support of all who lived in Transcona was trusted and respected. You and Dr. Kozin will not be forgotten and how you positively impacted all who knew you. p.s. I always loved your place at the lake and my parents Bill and Marg Maslanko highly respected you both. - Posted by: Janice Maslanko (Neighbor and former paper girl a5 Lakeshore Heights and former resident of Transcona) on: Sep 22, 2024
