Born: Sep 12, 1931
Date of Passing: Sep 20, 2024
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANDREW (ANDY) ALEXIUK
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Andrew (Andy) on September 20, 2024, at 93 years of age.
He will be fondly remembered by his loving wife Edith (nee Pettitt), his children, Lori Alexiuk, Kerri (Ken Sutherland) and Duane (Celin) Alexiuk. Missing him dearly are his six grandchildren, Scott (Jess), Jeanette, Kayla, Keenan, Kyle and Kelton.
He is survived by his brother Philip (Marlene) Alexiuk, sister Jean Genik and sister-in-law Pat Alexiuk.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Lena (nee Kereliuk), his siblings, John, Marika and Eli (in infancy), Matt, Paul and Nettie.
Andy was born on the family farm at Sundown, MB, on September 12, 1931. In order to supplement the farm income, he, his dad and brothers tended a trapline for a variety of fur-bearing animals.
He was proud of his Canadian/Ukrainian heritage and still had an affiliation with the church in Sundown.
He obtained his Grade 11 at the Sundown High School. To acquire his Grade 12 education, he spent 1950-1951 at St. Andrew’s College in Winnipeg.
At 17, he became a permit teacher in a one-room rural Manitoba school with 26 students. In 1951-1952 he attended the Manitoba Provincial Normal School in preparation for a career in teaching. He completed his degrees in Education and Science in the 1960s, through summer and night school classes. He taught in several rural schools in Manitoba for 17 years.
Life threw him a curve ball and he had to change professions, working for the Canada Revenue Agency and retiring in 1994. He loved to help others so he turned this into a positive, assisting many friends and family with their taxes over the years.
Andy was a staunch sports fan. He supported the Goldeyes, Jets and Bombers, and attended many home games. He loved Manitoba sports! He spent four plus decades in senior baseball, and was head coach for many teams. He was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Honour Society in 1993 and inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
Andy was community minded. He was very involved with the Norberry Community Club in their Minor Baseball Program and hall rental for many years. He was an avid cribbage player, although thinking it was a competitive sport! He also volunteered at the United Church for many years.
He enjoyed deer and goose hunting with his brothers, and especially his son-in-law, Ken and grandson, Keenan. He could spot a deer or goose better than anyone.
Andy was a dedicated family man. He met his wife, Edith, when both were on the teaching staff at Erickson, MB. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary recently on July 25. They lived in their home in St. Vital for 57 years.
He was a humble and kind man. He had a great sense of humour and he would always have a good story or joke. He laughed frequently which was infectious.
The family enjoyed many camping trips throughout Canada. One memorable one was to Atlantic Canada where the car (a ‘66 Merc) didn’t want to leave and kept breaking down. Andy and Edith travelled to Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Iceland.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the United Church in Meadowood on Monday, September 30 at 1:00 p.m. The service will be livestreamed on the church’s webpage (ucim.org).
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame (mbhof.ca) or to a charity of your choice.

On behalf of Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre, we send out heartfelt condolences to a very important person in our CC family. Andy was a Lifetime Builder Award recipient at Norberry CC, and it was always great to see him at events where all the past members were invited. Even if he couldn't attend, his phone call letting us know was always appreciated, and it was great to talk with him. He will be missed... - Posted by: Carmelle Remillard (friend) on: Oct 01, 2024

I lived next door to Andy and his wife Edith. Andy would always wave to me and ask me how I'm doing. He was always very kind to our family. Whenever my brother and I locked ourselves out of the house either him or Edith were home to allow us in their house or have a key waiting for us. Condolences to all his family. We grew up playing with the grandkids as we were around the same ages as them. I personally even babysat them. We knew pretty much all the family since we were live right next door. - Posted by: Kendra Declercq (Previous neighbor) on: Sep 29, 2024

I'm very sad seeing this in the paper today. I worked with Andy at CRA back in the '80's. We became friends instantly and had a great time working together enjoying each other's humor. We were always laughing. He would always rib me on my first name. He would always say, "Are you a pole Valter?" I retired 20 years after Andy did but I always thought about how Andy is doing and would ask his son in-law, Ken Sutherland from time to time how the old dog was doing. Rest in peace Andy boy, sure glad we crossed paths in life! - Posted by: Walter Mazepa (Co worker) on: Sep 28, 2024
