ERMA MURRAY
Our Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma (G.G.) was a remarkable woman who defied the odds from the very beginning.
She was born to Ida and Jim Sward on April 8, 1923, and was the twin that was not expected to survive. Yet her resilience and strength resulted in a life well lived, celebrating 101 years.
Erma was a devoted member of the Rosedale United (Churchill Park United) Church, where she found community and purpose throughout her life. Her unwavering faith was a cornerstone of her character, guiding her in her many roles as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, and helping sustain her in her final years of life. For over 80 years, she was a proud member of the Rebekah Confidence Lodges # 40 where she dedicated herself to service and support for others.
Her passions were many - she found joy in knitting, creating warmth and comfort with her hands; baking, where the sweet aromas of her kitchen continue in our own homes, her baking recipes are legendary. She also enjoyed the camaraderie of curling and bowling with friends. A lover of books, she spent countless hours reading, and when her eyes failed her, she continued with audiobooks.
Erma loved her family fiercely. Her legacy is woven into each of our lives, and we will carry forward her spirit of love and kindness.
Erma is survived by her sister Helen, her children, Wendy Zimmer (Bruce) and Bill (Terry); grandchildren Mandy (Berkley) and Cory (Megan) and great-grandchildren Ava, Liv, Elise, Ayla and Beckham.
She was predeceased by her husband Tom of 58 years, her twin Earl, and brothers Albert and Arnott.
We would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge for their care and compassion in Mom's final years. A special thank-you to Jessica who had a wonderful connection with Mom.
Cremation has taken place, and a private Celebration of Life will be held by family.

Wendy, Bill and families. So sorry to hear of mom's passing. She was a lovely lady and had a wonderful long life. I have fond memories of working together, time at our cottages with her and your dad and her wonderful baking. I remember her spending many patient hours teaching me to knit at lunch breaks at work, a skill that I have used all my life thanks to her. May the many fond memories of this wonderful lady help you through this sad time. Our deepest sympathy, Pam and Bert Pescitelli - Posted by: Pam and Bert Pescitelli (friend and forme4r co-worker) on: Oct 05, 2024

It was her wee face and bright smile that caught my attention in today's section of the Winnipeg Free Press. I was lucky enough to get to know Erma and Tom as curling mates. I found out from them that they had a son and daughter and that I had worked with their son Bill. I witnessed some of her knitting creations and heard of her great love of her sister. She was a fire cracker and I truly enjoyed my 2 hours a week with her. Just the sweetest lady. My heartfelt condolences to your entire family. Hugs. - Posted by: Melanie Schade (Curler) on: Oct 05, 2024
