VALSA DANIELS
Dr. Valsa (Mathews) Daniels, 77, died on October 7, 2024, after a long battle with a difficult to diagnose condition, probably pneumonia.
Valsa was born in India and moved to Canada on October 6, 1975, 49 years ago and a day before her passing. Valsa is survived by her husband of 49 years, George; her son Vijay and his family (Lia, Rebecca, Mikayla, and Benjamin), and her brother Zachariah Mathews and his family in Delhi, India.
When she wasn’t working, she and George enjoyed travelling, visiting dozens of countries to see the iconic sites of man and nature, including the Great Pyramids and the Taj Mahal, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and Yellowstone. In addition, she was an excellent cook, of everything from cheesecakes to curries and biryani, and a devoted gardener. Her favourite flower was, fittingly, the red rose: a commanding and colourful bloom that will be loved perennially.
She was a legend among medical students and residents and won many Outstanding Teaching awards from University of Manitoba, as voted on by medical students and medical residents. She presented papers at World Stroke Conferences in Canada, the US, Europe and India. She retired after 25 years as chief of the stroke unit at the University of Manitoba teaching hospital, and Associate Professor in the department of Medicine.
Valsa was a deeply committed doctor who had extraordinarily high standards for herself. She was dedicated to her staff and her patients, as the only Stroke Rehab doctor in Manitoba for decades. She could often be found walking the wards long after official working hours, and once even handed out meals to patients while staffers were on strike.
Services will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, with viewing starting at 12:00 noon, and service and refreshments following at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, in-memoriam donations may be made to Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 1M3.

I do not know this doctor but just reading her history as a doctor. I want to thank her for all she's done including handing out meals to patients while workers were on strike. Thank you for all you did as a doctor in Winnipeg for all its residents. Rest in Peace! - Posted by: Debbie (Obituary Reader) on: Oct 12, 2024
