Peacefully, surrounded by friends and family, Shelley Brown lost her battle with cancer on the evening of October 8, 2024, at St. Boniface Hospital.
Shelley was first diagnosed in September of 2020 and put up an amazing fight until the end. She did not allow cancer to slow her down. In fact, she used the last four years to achieve many goals, like holidaying with family and winning many Thoroughbred horse races.
Shelley had a full life. In the spring and summer, she lived in Winnipeg and raced horses at Assiniboia Downs. There, she won Leading Trainer of the Year in 2012 and topped the board for purse earnings multiple times. She also won the Canadian Derby in Edmonton in 2020, shortly after her original diagnosis.
In the winter months, you could find Shelley developing young horses on her farm in Florida. She began wintering in Florida more than 25 years ago, and she always felt the Sunshine State was her home. When the summer racing season ended in Canada, she could not wait to head south.
Shelley had an eye for Thoroughbred horses with the potential to succeed not only in racing but other sports like show jumping and dressage. Finding new careers for retiring racehorses was one of her passions, and Shelley got a lot of joy watching her former charges thrive with their new owners.
Always generous with her time and knowledge, Shelley leaves a legacy as a remarkable horse trainer. Her impact will continue to inspire and educate riders and horses.
Shelley leaves behind her sister Lynne Brown (Colleen) of Regina and brother Dean Brown of Montreal, along with many dear friends whom she considered family, including Deb Johnson and Shelley Hallick who were at her side until the end.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 3:00 p.m., at Assiniboia Downs, 3975 Portage Ave, Second Level Terrace Dining Room.
Thank you to the Assiniboia Downs community who showed up for Shelley, time and again, during her long fight with cancer. Thank you also to the Internal Medicine team at St. Boniface Hospital who did their best to keep her comfortable these past weeks.

This is very sad news. You always followed your passion for horses. I remember well your mom taking us to the barn to ride or going to the track in Regina. Your parents in hospital in high school and an injury that almost took your ability to ride. Through everything you soared. OCT. 19/24 11:00PM HELLO TO SHELLEY'S FAMILY AND HER BROTHER DEAN BROWN. WHEN DEAN BROWN ARRIVED FROM MONTREAL-HE DROVE INTO A MC DONALDS-NEAR ASD. THE ONE ACROSS THE STREET FROM A CHURCH-AND BESIDE A SHOPPING CENTRE- THAT HAD A SAFEWAY STORE AND OTHER STORES-LIQUOR STORE AND CANADA TAXATION CENTER ETC. IN THIS COMPLEX. UNICITY IS THE LAST SHOPS AREA-BEFORE THE RACETRACK BRIDGE AREA-HEADINGLY ETC. AFTER THIS PORTAGE AND WESTWOOD CORNER WITH THE MAC DONALD'S IN IT. ANY HOW I WAS PARKED BESIDE THE MAC DONALDS-WHEN DEAN 'S 1/2 TON PARKED BESIDE MY CAR-I HAD THE HOOD UP-LOOKING AT MY MOTOR-HE CAME OVER TO HELP OUT IF ANYTHING WAS WRONG ETC. I SAID I'M GOOD-AND WE CHATTED-I'M IN WPG. TO SEE MY SISTER-I'M FROM MONTREAL. WE SHOOK HANDS-MY SISTER WORKS AT THE TRACK. SHE'S A HORSE TRAINER-ETC. BEEN AT THIS TRACK FOR YEARS-HER NAME IS SHELLEY BROWN. FOR HEAVEN SAKES-I KNOW HER ! ETC. FOR SEEMS LIKE YEARS! I ALWAYS CHEERED FOR HER HORSES TO WIN! WHY? SHE SEEMED NIFTY! FUN TO WATCH-I LIKED HER HATS! SHE WORE A WHITE ONE OFTEN! I REGRET NOT TO TAKE DEAN IN FOR A COFFEE ETC. WHO KNOWS? KARMA ETC.? HE WAS -IS-A LOVELY BROTHER TO HER-ALWAYS THERE WITH HER AT ASD..SO I'M TOLD. I WAS AT ST. BONIFACE MANY TIMES-DOWN STAIRS-WHEN SHE WAS IN THERE-BUT DID NOT KNOW! SHE WAS STAYING THERE DARN!! HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE SPENT AT THE ROBINS DONUTS COFFEE AREA-WHILE SEEING DRS. THERE-CT-SCANS ETC. AND SHE WAS THERE! JUST THIS AUGUST-SEPT.OCT./24 WAS THERE FOR APPOINTMENTS /SCANS ETC. HAD I'DE KNOWN-SHE WAS THERE-I'DE WOULD HAVE SEEN HER! AT THE TRACK I HAD ON MY BLACK NY YANKEES HAT -AND WENT OVER TO SAY HELLO! SHE WAS SITTING CLOSE TO THE PADDOCK AREA GREY SEATS-OVERLOOKING THE WINNERS CIRCLE. I SAID, HERE SHELLEY-TAKE THIS PAPER -HAS MY TELEPHONE NUMBER-ON IT -CALL ME- YOU AND I-ARE THE SAME! WE CAN EXCHANGE INFO ABOUT OUR HEALTH ETC. SHE PUT IT IN HER JEAN POCKET-HELD MY HAND AND SMILED-HER HAND WAS WET. I KNEW WHY IT WAS THAT WAY-SEE YOU LATER-WIN! SHELLEY! I'LL WATCH YOU WHEREVER I AM AT-CHEER FOR YOU! HAVE FUN! I MET YOUR BROTHER- SO FOR PAST FEW YEARS-I'DE CHECK IN ON HER. I did not know Shelly personally but we had horses at the Downs when she was up and coming. Although we have not been around the track for quite awhile I have always followed her victories quietly cheering her on and admiring her successes and her strength over the years.
