SUSAN GERBRANDT

September 13, 1919 – October 13, 2024

With sadness and gratitude for her life we announce the peaceful passing of Susan Heinrichs Gerbrandt, aged 105, at Pembina Personal Care Home Sunday morning Oct 13, 2024.

Susan was predeceased by her loving husband Henry Gerbrandt.

She is survived by her loving family: Gerald and Esther Gerbrandt, Elaine Gerbrandt, Norma and John Thiessen, Linda and Eckhard Claassen, Rose and Larry Tryon, Abe Bergen and Harriet Hamer; grandchildren Nathan and Angela Gerbrandt, Bradley and Natalie Gerbrandt, Virginia Gerbrandt and Andrew Richert, Jeremy Bergen and Rebecca Steinmann, Rachel Bergen and Hector Argueta, Laura Thiessen, Julia Thiessen and Joel Rempel, Jonathan and Sarah Claassen, Vanessa and Mark Wiehler; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters, one brother, three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Susan was born on the family farm south of Horndean on September 13, 1919, and enjoyed a happy and challenging childhood with 11 sisters and one brother. She married Henry Gerbrandt in 1944, and after one year of training in Toronto they began a term of service in Mexico as medical missionaries. Settling in Altona in 1950, Susan found herself raising four children, helping her husband in his ministry and eventually establishing her own path in the creation of a cradle roll program to support new mothers. A move to Winnipeg in 1971 for Henry’s work was a huge transition but again Susan flourished, getting a job with Family Services, taking university courses and continuing her ministry with Women and Mission. Her husband’s retirement opened up 20-plus years of extensive travel and various service stints in Germany and Mexico. Her final years with Henry meant daily trips to Pembina Place Personal Care Home to be with him until his passing in 2010. Grieving deeply, she still developed another phase of her life, driving until age 98, cooking, baking, visiting family and friends and very frequent trips to Tim Hortons with her children. She reluctantly spent her last year in care at Pembina Place.

The family would like to thank family and friends who visited and the staff at Pembina Place who provided compassionate care.

Funeral Service will be held at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford Street, Winnipeg, on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.

Donations may be made in Susan’s memory to Canadian Mennonite University

  • Dear Gerbrandt family, We were so saddened to hear of your mother’s passing but also joyful that she has reached her heavenly home!! I, Susan, remember her from the time I was still quite young and she helped my mom in our home with us children. Later, whenever I saw her and your dad, we always felt the warmth of their love and care for us. I will cherish those memories. May God give you comfort and peace during this time of grief but also wonderful memories to hold onto!! Love, Susan & Rendall Pries - Posted by: Susan (Teichroeb) & Rendall Pries (Friends) on: Oct 27, 2024

  • My parents cherished their long-standing friendship with Mr. & Mrs. Gerbrandt, stemming from their time in Altona and in particular at Altona Bergthaler Church. The Funk and Gerbrandt kids shared space in the community, Sunday School, Youth Group and public school. Memories abound. And now your second parent has left our earth. We wish all of you comfort as the tears fall, joy in special or tender remembrances and healing peace over time. - Posted by: Marlene (Funk) & Baj Permanand (Long time acquaintances) on: Oct 25, 2024
