It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Laurent (Labit) Dumont on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, in St Laurent, Manitoba at the age of 65 years old. He is survived by his wife Brenda; his sons, André (Joëlle) and Nathan (Hilary); his siblings; Yvon (Lyla), Paul (Debbie), Guy (Dania), Annette (Scott), Yvette, Jeannette (Richard); along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
He is predeceased by his father Willie, his mother, Thérèse, his brothers Gaston, Aurèle, Réal and Joseph, his sister Annette and his in-laws Edgar, Suzanne and sister-in-law Roberta, brothers-in-law John, Lionel and André.
Laurent was born and raised in St Laurent, Manitoba. He spent his childhood playing sports and hunting with friends and family. This is where he met his life-long partner Brenda Carrière. Laurent and Brenda married in 1982 and enjoyed 42 years of marriage. Together they had many adventures like moving to Calgary and raising their two boys.
After completing his schooling at the Red River College, Laurent and Brenda packed up their belongings and moved to Calgary for seven years. This is where Laurent started his career with BMO as an information technologist, a position he held for over 25 years. He ended his career working as le Directeur de l’informatique for the DSFM. Laurent was studious, intelligent and persistent, all qualities that allowed him to be successful.
Laurent was an avid hunter, a fisherman and a proud member of the Métis community. He dedicated many hours working on set for Au pays des Mitchifs, a show that he prided himself on. He valued hard work while still enjoying the small things in life. Laurent enjoyed music and wouldn’t hesitate to pick up his guitar for a quick jam session, whether by himself or with friends and family. In his retirement, Laurent developed new passions, notably his cats, his jacuzzi and his garden.
But foremost, Laurent cared deeply about his relationships. He was always there to offer a helping hand, especially for his sons; André and Nathan. You could often find Laurent at the dinner table, laughing over a game of cards or storytelling with the people he loved. He spent his final years building his own little paradise in his hometown, surrounding himself with nature, music and his community. Labit’s contagious laugh and beautiful smile will be missed by all. Though he leaves behind a big hole in many people’s lives, he also leaves behind a legacy that we will cherish forever.
Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Laurent Roman Catholic Church, St. Laurent, MB. Interment to follow in the Parish Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Richard Schon, Leo Lambert, Gilbert Buors and Guy Fontaine.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Laurent (Labit’s) memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 247 Provencher Blvd, Unit B, Winnipeg, MB R2H 0G8.

I worked with Laurent during his time in Calgary with BMO. He was a great person to work with and respected amongst his colleagues. My fondest memory is during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Laurent was an avid pin collector. He left Calgary to go back to Manitoba there is a fun picture of him during his going away lunch of him being presented with a unique “pin collection”. He has the biggest smile and proudly held the gift in his hands. He will be missed and fondly remembered. My thoughts are with his family. - Posted by: Lorrie Pierson (Work colleague - Calgary.) on: Oct 25, 2024
