John “Jack” Andrew Chapman passed away peacefully on October 31, 2024, at 95, surrounded by family at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon. Born on September 10, 1929, at Brandon General Hospital, he was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Olive Chapman; brothers, Bruce, Glenn, Colin, and Keith; and cousin, Wilbert.
Jack is lovingly remembered by his wife, Peggy; children, Sandra (Mervin) Melnychenko, Phillip (Janice) Chapman, Jan (Braden) Pilling, and Barb (Todd) Chambers; grandchildren, Laura Melnychenko (Don Lomenda), Andrew (Jennifer) Melnychenko, Angel (Deegan) James, Jessica Melnychenko, Jade (Pritish) Samuel, Jasmine (Daryl) Kopytko, Joel (Lays) Chapman, Ben Pilling, Allie Pilling, Charlie Chambers (Madi Humphreys), and Kolby Chambers; five great-grandsons; and sisters-in-law, Jean, Peggy, and Linda Faye Chapman.
Jack married Margaret (Peggy) Mawer on November 12, 1960. They were best friends and life-long partners, nearly reaching their 64th anniversary. In 1963, they built their home on a farm on the Brandon Hills' north side, where they raised their family. He farmed alongside his dad and brother, Keith and then Phillip, still helping, long after he had retired.
When not farming, Jack enjoyed canoeing, snowmobiling, wood lathe work, and photography. He was a self-taught guitarist and, in later years, loved gardening, playing solitaire on the computer, supporting his grandchildren’s activities and going for coffee at McDonald's. He was dedicated to his faith, attending church, prayer meetings, and teaching Sunday School. A long-time Brandon Hills community member, he also served on the cemetery board and helped with community events. He was on the founding board of Westoba Credit Union and served as chair for one year.
Jack’s faith in Jesus and his legacy of love for God remain as a testimony for all who knew him. His memory lives on in the hearts of family and friends.
A celebration of Jack’s life was held on Friday, November 8th, at Bethel Christian Assembly. Complete obituary available on www.memorieschapel.com
