It is with great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Norma Gladys Barkman (nee Borkowsky), at the age of 94 on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
Norma was born June 23, 1930, to the late Henry T. and Martha (Mantie) Borkowsky, in Bristol, MB.
She was a strong independent woman, living and working both in Winnipeg and Ontario as a single woman in the 1940s.
Gordon Barkman convinced her to come home, and Norma married her great love on September 26, 1953. They were together 65 years until Gordon’s passing in 2018.
She lived a life dedicated to learning; education, health, arts, sports and Tai Chi. To share her love, she co-founded the Steinbach Arts Council (now celebrating 45 years) and encouraged her children to pursue the arts as well as education.
Her life will forever be cherished by her sons, Kurt (Eva) of Denver, CO, Andrew (Monique) of Montreal, QC, daughter Anne (David) of Steinbach, grandchildren, Kelly (Nick) Tweiten, Megan (Trevor) Tompkins, Michael (Arielle) Barkman, Jill Barkman, Daniel Banman, Robert Banman, and great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Alexis Tompkins, Rylie Lang and Leo Barkman.
In addition to Gordon, Norma was predeceased by her cherished daughter Dallas (Barkman) Dufault and son-in-law Mark Dufault.
The family would like to extend special thanks to all the staff at the Brightwater Senior Living Tuxedo, Dr. Brian Sharkey and the attendants from Gentle Care At Home for their care and compassion in the last days of Norma’s life.
Donations in Norma’s memory may be made to an arts charity of your choice or the Steinbach Arts Council.
The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
Private Interment.

We heard of Norma’s passing, and are unable to be present at this time as we are in MX. We are so grateful that we got to know her and Gordon over the years, through our friendship with the McGowans. We always enjoyed her company and interesting and funny stories. She was a lovely lady, and will be missed. Sadly, another chapter in your family history has ended. Please accept our sincere condolences, and our best wishes as your family moves forward. Richard and Joanne Tabor ♥️♥️ - Posted by: Richard and Joanne Tabor (Friends) on: Nov 12, 2024
