Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Caitlin and I were Martha and Ernie’s neighbors on Wolseley Avenue, and it was truly a joy to connect with them over the fence dividing our backyards. There are so many memories from those years that I hold dear. First and foremost, my bond with Martha and Ernie was unlike any I’ve had with neighbors at any of my other homes. When Caitlin was a baby, I had surgery, and after coming home, I was supposed to have someone with me. Martha immediately stepped in, volunteering to check in on me, bring soup, and ensure I was managing. Her kindness during that time meant the world to me. Martha and Ernie were also the ones who would gently remind me when the trees needed trimming or when work needed to be done around the house. Their own home and garden were always immaculate, and their stunning flower beds, especially the tall, blue delphiniums, were nothing short of inspiring. Their backyard wasn’t just a garden—it was a beautifully maintained extension of their home, complete with a charming vintage metal table and red chairs. One memory that stands out vividly was when my sister’s friend asked if she could use Martha and Ernie’s yard and home for her wedding photos. Without hesitation, they said “yes” and even handed her the keys before heading off to the lake that weekend. The photos taken in their lovely home and garden were breathtaking. That couple is still happily married in Victoria, BC, and I’m certain those pictures remain a cherished keepsake. I’ll also never forget the times I’d see Martha at the kitchen sink, and as soon as she spotted me coming home, she’d step outside for a quick chat. Those small, thoughtful moments defined what it meant to have great neighbors. Martha was a beautiful woman who lived a beautiful life, and I feel so fortunate to have known her. - Posted by: Margaret Wiens (Neighbour) on: Nov 19, 2024
