WILLIAM (BILL) HUMPHREYS
On November 20, 2024, Bill passed peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre at 102 years young after a long and well-lived life.
Bill was born in 1922 in Winnipeg, the oldest of nine children. Predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Frances; and seven of his siblings; he is survived by his sons, Jim (Kathy), Ted (Bev), Dale (Diana); daughter Barb D’Avignon (Maurice); eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sister June Isfeld; many nieces and nephews; and good friend Jan.
Bill worked hard to provide for his family and achieved many things. Bill taught school for many years and continued to work as a volunteer until he was 95 at the Western Canadian Aviation Museum. Bill served in the Air Force in the Second World War. After that he spent several years as a mechanic, taking classes in the evening to reach his goal of being a teacher. He really enjoyed being a teacher for many years. Many students kept in touch over the years including many cards and letters from former staff and students for his 100th.
Bill could fix or build anything. He built our first boat in the basement and back yard and we spent many years waterskiing behind that boat. Bill and Fran purchased the family cottage in the early 1960s at Brereton Lake and spent many years of enjoyment there with family and friends. The dock was a busy place with many neighbours around the lake bringing their boats for engine repair. Bill never accepted payment for his service except for one who insisted on paying. He owned Jeanne’s Bakery; payment was delicious. At 102 years young, if you told Bill what was wrong with your car, he could still tell you how to fix it. Amazing man.
Music was a big part of Bill’s life. An accomplished trumpet/organ player and dancer, Bill’s favourite music played right up until his passing thanks to the great staff at Deer Lodge Centre (DLC).
Special thanks to the nurses and staff of DLC T4 for their care and compassion. Bill could not have had a better place to reside for the past one and a half years.
As per Bill’s wishes, no service will be held. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Deer Lodge Foundation.

I wish I could do more than offer my condolences to the entire Humpheys family. I have fond memories of Mr. Humphreys at Brereton Lake. I remember how he taught me to water ski and spent endless hours towing us behind his home made boat. I remember how he was the first to respond when anyone couldn't get their lawnmower started or their outboard to run. As I got older and Mr. Humphreys became Bill he became a friend and mentor I'll never forget. May he rest in peace with wonderful legacy he has left behind in his students, family and friend. - Posted by: Greg Matthew (Friend) on: Jan 06, 2025

My condolences to the family. Mr. Bill Humphreys was one of my auto shop teachers at St. James Collegiate. He also had an outboard motor's evening course which my Dad and I attended working on my 1957 7.5 HP Scott Atwater. He was a great guy. - Posted by: Paul Tilley (Student) on: Nov 30, 2024
