WILLIAM (BILL) JOHN CARLYLE

William (Bill) John Carlyle, 83, passed peacefully on November 23, 2024, surrounded by loved ones, in Grace Hospital, Winnipeg. Beloved husband of Isobel (née Goldie), married 54 years.

Devoted father of six children, Catherine (Sean), Elizabeth (Bassam), Diana (James), Margaret (François), Thomas (Valarie), and James (Atchala); and grandfather of seven, soon-to-be eight, grandchildren: Rungano, Ruvimbo, Anne, Samira, Jacob, Michael, Lucas, and Tong.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lucille (née Merrett) and William Masterton Carlyle; and brother-in-law John Goldie.

He is survived by his loving brothers, Tom (Fran) and John (Denise); sister Catherine (Patrick); sisters-in-law, Helen and Val; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was a graduate of University of Manitoba, where he met his lifelong friend Barry Kaye. He went on to doctoral studies at University of Edinburgh and, while there, met and married his wife, Isobel. Bill was professor of human and cultural geography at the University of Winnipeg until his retirement in 2012. In 1975-1976, he moved his young family to Ayr, Scotland to teach at the West Scotland College of Agriculture. He specialized in agriculture and rural land use on the Canadian Prairies, and was recognized with the John H. Warkentin Award for scholarly research, as well as a teaching award, during his 42-year career. His office was a familiar gathering place for family who attended the U of W, including his nephew, Ian.

With seemingly boundless energy, Bill enjoyed athletics, fun with his brood of children, watching sports, hunting, tinkering with his '64 Plymouth and, in later years, wildlife photography, kayaking at Minaki, and long walks, in rain or shine, through Assiniboine Park. In retirement, he joined Isobel on UK trips to visit the Goldie family, including nephew Tim and niece Rosie.

Bill’s sharp intellect, self-deprecating humour, humility, loyalty and easy banter earned him friends and acquaintances from all walks of life.

His family, friends, career and many pastimes were his passions. Above all, he loved life. He will be sorely missed.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 3, at Prairie Spirit United Church, located at 207 Thompson Dr., in Winnipeg. Light refreshments following the service.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I knew Bill Carlyle for 34 years and I can definitely say that he was the Best Professor, the Best Boss, and the Best friend I ever knew. You will be immensely missed! My heartfelt Condolences go out to his entire family. Rest in Peace my friend. - Posted by: Albert Perez (friend) on: Dec 07, 2024

  • Condolences to Isobel and all the family. I knew Bill since 1966 when he would come down from Edinburg and stay weekends with my late mother, Evelyn. He loved those trips because he got breakfast in bed. Always amusing, low key and eccentric, Bill was wonderful with young children and would play hide and seek late into the night with my own daughter on Assiniboine Avenue. He had good taste too because he married Isobel, a fellow Yorkshire person. May he now rest in the light. After the mourning comes the morning. with affection; Peter Carlyle-Gordge, St. James, Winnipeg. - Posted by: Peter Carlyle-Gordge (former brother in law) on: Dec 04, 2024

  • Dear Catherine and Carlyle Family, Please accept our sincere condolences. I have great memories of visiting with Mr. Carlyle when staying at his home for a couple weeks, on two occasions. I still recall speaking to Mr. Carlyle over the phone in summer of 2013, when he spoke highly of his family and wished the best for mine. Most of all his words of support will always be remembered. With great sympathy. Sharon & the Odell Family (Ottawa) - Posted by: Sharon Odell (Friend) on: Dec 01, 2024

  • Bill and I began university together at the U of M back in 1957 and maintained contact with each other over the years. His warm. witty and ingenuous annual Xmas letters were a cherished treat. I was looking forward to this year's edition... I am deeply saddened by his loss. Condolences to Isobel and his family. - Posted by: Bob Holloway (Longtime friend) on: Nov 30, 2024
