Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGENEVIEVE ARMSTRONG
Genevieve Armstrong passed away at Middlechurch Personal Care Home at the age of 89 on Friday, December 13, 2024.
She leaves to cherish her memory son Scott, daughter Llwellyn, sister Dorothy Hardy, sister-in-law Sandra, and many extended family members and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth (2014), father Wasyl Hordy, mother Maria, brothers, Steve and George (Nel), and parents-in-law, William and Muriel.
She grew up in Winnipeg’s North End, with her residence also housing the family’s grocery store. She obtained her Bachelors of Arts and Pedagogy from the University of Manitoba and took great pride in being a teacher specializing in high school mathematics. She was employed by the Protestant School Board of Montreal and at Miles Macdonell and River East Collegiates in Winnipeg, where she served as musical director for annual school productions. A few years after marrying Ken in 1961, she focused on raising Scott and Llwellyn. Her family meant everything to her. Later on in her working years, she conducted choirs at a number of Age & Opportunity Seniors Centres across Winnipeg.
Gen was extremely proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She was a life-long member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Ivan Suchavsky where she lent her voice to the church choir, volunteered on the Finance Committee until earlier this year, and served on the Executive Committees of the Brotherhood and Ladies Society of Olha Kobylanska where she helped to organize annual fall suppers and spring teas. Blessed with a beautiful alto voice, she sang with the O. Koshetz Choir for over 40 years. Gen coordinated weekly bingo fundraisers for the group and treasured spending Thursday evenings at rehearsal with her choir family.
The family extends its sincerest gratitude to the wonderful team at Middlechurch Personal Care Home for their stellar care and support for our family. We are ever thankful to family and friends who checked in with Mom and us over the last few months.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Fr. Evan Maximiuk presiding. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, 4535 Main Street.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Rogan, Dan Kolberg, Gary Kowalchuk, Michael Horbay, Ted Barnett, Kevin Marks. Charitable donations in her memory may be made to the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Ivan Suchavsky (PO Box 43046 RPO Kildonan Place, Winnipeg, R2C 5G5), O. Koshetz Choir (PO Box 3891 STN B, Winnipeg, R2W 5H9), or a charity of one’s choice.

Genevieve was my mathematics teacher at River East Collegiate. When I attended the U of M, I visited her a number of times at her home nearby and she would always treat me to a plate of double-decker sandwiches. She and Ken were responsible for my lifelong interest in mathematics. Although I switched from mathematics to philosophy, I maintained my interest in mathematics by studying and teaching philosophy of mathematics and symbolic logic at the tertiary and postgraduate levels. My condolences to her family and many friends. - Posted by: Karl Pfeifer (Student & friend) on: Aug 09, 2025

Miss Hardy taught me Math and Coral in high school. I was in her choirs and musical productions. She was such a wonderful teacher and choir director as well as a beautiful person. She was so special that we students all got together and made up a beautiful song at the end of the year named “Sweet Genevieve”. She was crying. Rest In Peace.
