ANASTASIA NELLIE URCHYN
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Anastasia Nellie Urchyn.
Nellie was born on November 1, 1925 in Komarno MB. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph, parents, siblings and niece.
From an early age, Nellie faced challenges with the loss of her mother in infancy and grew up during difficult economic times of the Great Depression. Nonetheless, Nellie was ambitious and had an excellent work ethic working at the Komarno General Store and Winnipeg Beach.
At 18, Nellie bought a bus ticket to Winnipeg and with one suitcase in hand, she arrived in Winnipeg in search of a job and a better life. Nellie was hired by Eatons Department Store and with great pride and joy, worked there for 43 years having achieved many awards and accolades.
In June of 1966 Nellie married Joseph Urchyn. Together they shared a beautiful home, enjoyed entertaining, traveling, tended to Nellie’s garden and loved their animals. In 1983, Nellie’s beloved Joe passed away and Nellie became widowed.
Despite many challenges and losses, Nellie took comfort in her faith, her home, garden, close friends and family. She had a calmness about her and a positive attitude to take life as it comes and make the best of every situation.
Nellie truly enjoyed life and was blessed with good health. She loved her family and friends. Nellie also had a great eye for fashion with a classic style, always neatly permed hair, pressed trousers and beautiful blouses. She spoke eloquently and carried herself with dignity.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the staff on 3rd floor St. Anne’s of the Holy Family Home for their kindness, compassion and dignified care for Nellie. To Carlita, Nellie’s companion, thank you for taking care of Nellie, taking her on numerous walks to flower and vegetable gardens and being Nellie’s support.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave., Winnipeg, MB with Father Ivan Dzhur CSsR officiating. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Nellie’s memory to The Winnipeg Humane Society.
