Newman (nee Craig): Sally, our beautiful Mom, Grandma, Wife, Sister and Aunt passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home with the love of her family surrounding her. She was 80 years of age. Sally was born in Brandon on March 15, 1944, and lived in Brandon her entire life. She attended the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing in Brandon, graduating and becoming a Registered Nurse on September 7, 1965. She nursed in Brandon for 38 years, first on the Maternity ward, then the OR Recovery Room, and finally caring for seniors at the Assiniboine Centre, before retiring in 2003. Sally had many, many friends through her nursing career, and they remained a strong network of support even late into Mom’s life.
Mom’s life was very full when we were growing up. She kept a tidy house, and loved to cook and keep us all well fed. She loved watching Karla do ballet and piano as equally as she loved to watch David play hockey and soccer. She took ceramics classes and painted several beautiful pieces that we now treasure even more. We spent summers at the cabin at Clear Lake being on the boat, swimming, playing lawn darts, and sitting around the campfire visiting with the Grey Owl crew. She loved to attend the theatre and saw countless musicals and ballets over the years, and we loved going for lunch at Lady of the Lake to browse the shop and enjoy their delicious biscuits. She loved to visit Karla and Steve in London, ON where she was affectionately known as “Gramma Sally” by the extended family there. She volunteered for many years at the Brandon Humane Society lending a helping hand with anything she could, and no doubt showering the dogs with love and affection.
Where Mom truly found pure joy was in being a Grandma to Lucas and Lawson. She babysat whenever she could, took them to the movies, had them for sleepovers, decorated their own room for them, and definitely lived by the mantra “what happens at Gramma’s stays at Gramma’s”.
Mom was in the care of Rideau Park Personal Care Home for four and a half years and we truly thank all of her caregivers and staff for their kindness and care, especially Mandy, Marlyss, Nataliia, Mark, Dawn, Brook, Chrissy, Kayla and Nicole. Our deep appreciation also extends to our own caregiver Wendy; you spent countless hours with our Mom showing her love and compassion every step of the way and we truly can’t express our thanks enough. Sally will be dearly and lovingly missed by John Newman, her daughter, Karla (Steve) and son, David (Audra); grandsons, Lucas and Lawson; her brother, Rick (Pat); nephews, Simon and Corey, niece, Emily, her dear friend, Moira and various other extended family members and friends including cousins and life-long friends Lois, Judy, June and Patty. She was predeceased by her biological father Harold Craig, her parents, Marion and Charles Haywood, and her brother, Douglas Craig, and her loving doggie-companion Juno “who blessed her life with her love and affection”.
A Celebration of Life with service and reception to follow will be held at Brockie Donovan Funeral Home, 332 8th Street, Brandon, MB on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sally can be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, MB, R7A 7M6.
