Peacefully after a brief illness, Shirley June Fenning, in her 96th year, was called home by her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on January 9, 2025.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Curt and Craig; sister-in-law Shirley Ann; nieces Tammy, Dawn, and Tara; and nephew Patrick. There are also many "adopted" daughters Mom has collected over the years who are also very special. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Jim (2006), her parents, David and Judith, and brothers, Charles William (Bill), and Robert (Bob).
Shirley was born March 18, 1929, in Bengough, SK near the family farm in Viceroy. Her early years were framed by the trials of the Depression and the war years. Mom and Dad met in Regina and married on June 6, 1953, in Viceroy, SK. They moved to Winnipeg, where they remained.
Mom worked for many years at the Canadian Wheat Board, interrupted for raising a family. Other places of employment were the SK Wheat Pool, Swift Canadian, and Canadian Bible Society. She made many lifelong friends at each. She was also a 10-year volunteer at Concordia Hospital until age 88.
Mom was a Christian with honesty, integrity, and faith being her anchors. She was a fierce defender of her home province and a loyal follower of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, keeping track of all the games and scores. She enjoyed her flower garden and feeding the birds. There were several trips out west to the farm and beyond, including Montana, Washington State, Branson, an Alaskan cruise, as well as an extended road trip through the backroads of the US southwest, thanks to her younger brother, Bob.
Mom was very social but also enjoyed her quiet time, reading, and carrying on the family tradition of jigsaw puzzles. Mom lived at Concordia Village for the last 10 years. This became her home, making many new friends among the residents and staff. These all became her family and the reason she lived 95 years.
Over the past few years, Shirley suffered from chronic health issues making daily life more and more difficult. She carried these burdens well, maintaining her cheerfulness and sense of humour to the very end. Thank you to the staff of the 4th and 5th floor at Grace Hospital for their care and support.
Cremation has occurred, according to Shirley’s wishes. A memorial service will be held at Concordia Village, 1125 Molson St. on January 21, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
A private interment for family and friends will be held later.
