KATHERINE (KAY) WINTER

(nee BERGEN)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Kay Winter, peacefully on January 23, 2025, at the age of 99.

Kay was predeceased by her husband John Winter (2017), father Martin Bergen (1930), mother Sara Abrams (1991), stepfather Peter Braun, and brothers, Martin Bergen and George Braun.

Kay is survived by sons, Frank (Roma) and Victor (Brenda); grandchildren, Thomas (Brooke), Reid (Julie), Brittney (McClay), Keaton (Stephanie); great-granddaughter Sophia Kay; siblings, Frieda and Bernie (Monica); sisters-in-law, Helen, Tina and Marilyn, and many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered as a loving, kind and selfless woman with an unwavering devotion to her family and community and will be deeply missed.

Kay was born in Shoenhorst, Ukraine on September 11, 1925. She lost her father at a young age, however, her mother remarried and the family grew and lived in the neighbouring village of Neundorf. In October of 1943, the family fled the war-torn country, eventually ending up in Canada in 1948.

Mom and Dad married on November 5, 1949. Together they worked hard and started both a family and a family business. Kay’s hands were never idle, whether she was lovingly preparing meals for her family, working at all hours to help in the family business, or tirelessly volunteering to make the community a better place. She was a lifelong volunteer, dedicating countless hours to organizations such as Bethania Personal Care Home (PCH); which ended up being her final home.

John and Kay loved their annual vacations to Hawaii and their summers at their cottage at Brereton Lake, where both friends and family joined them. Kay was an amazing cook and baker and always had something delicious waiting for whomever arrived.

The success of her family was her biggest blessing. Her grandchildren became the focus of her life and her greatest joy! She was never too busy to spend time with them; and they all have beautiful memories of their time spent with Oma.

We were blessed to have had Kay for 99 wonderful years. Her loss leaves an ache in our hearts. We take comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on in the love and values she installed in us.

We would like to thank the staff at Bethania PCH for all their excellent care and support. Also, thank you to all of you who shared your lives with Mom; for enriching her life with your generous love and understanding.

A private Celebration of Life will be held. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in Kay’s memory, please do so to Bethania PCH or to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Dear Family of Kae, Please accept my heartfelt condolences in the loss of your mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She had a regal bearing about her, a twinkle in her eye, soft-spoken, was very kind and fun to be with. She also took a keen interest in what was going on in in my life when she met me over the years. Our family was always very excited when John and Kay were coming over Sunday afternoon for"Vaspa" in the late 1940's and 50's. Words cannot make your loss less great, but may God grant you His peace as you mourn her loss yet celebrate a life well lived. Grandaughter of Gerhard Klassen, daughter of David and Helen Klassen. - Posted by: Roma Klassen Niessen (Extended family) on: Feb 01, 2025
