With heavy hearts, we share that George Alexander Smith passed away with his loving wife, Diane, holding his hand.
George was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, son, brother, uncle and friend, always ready with a joke or suggestion of how to make things better. His kindness, sense of humour and thoughtfulness will remain a cherished memory to his wife Diane; children, Cassandra (Marshall) and Don (Kerry); and grandchildren, Keyara (Carson) and Brady.
Born in 1943 to George Sr. and Elsie Smith, he along with his sister Evelyn grew up in Winnipeg where he graduated from the University of Manitoba with an MBA. The U of M played an important role in George’s life - that’s where he met his future wife Diane and worked in Continuing Education until his retirement in 2004.
George and Diane made their home in Winnipeg, where he was a loving and generous father, supporting his kids’ many sporting activities with countless hours spent driving them around, patiently helping with homework, planning summer camping trips in a beloved but unreliable VW Camper Van, fixing bicycles for resale, tackling home renovations and repairs, and being an all-around good guy. Diane and George enjoyed many travel adventures and fun times with their great friends Sandra and Bob Raeburn, and hosting annual Grey Cup parties for their Fort Richmond friends. Most importantly, George found his best friend and soulmate in Diane with whom he shared all of life’s adventures.
George’s wish was to be cremated and for his life to be celebrated with immediate family. You can honour George by sharing a funny story or telling a joke to spread happiness and bring joy.
In lieu of flowers, you may consider donating to the Manitoba Lung Association (www.mb.lung.ca) or a charity that has meaning to you. A photo-biography video honouring George’s life is accessible through the 'tributes' link below.

I was so saddened to hear of the loss of a dear colleague and friend. Our many years of working together in the Continuing Education Division at the U of M were enriched by George’s deep commitment to adult education, to students and to lifelong learning. His sense of humor and capacity to lighten even the most stressful situations nudged us to do the same. Even as George’s health became more confining, his doses of wit and rare quips never faltered. We, who gathered together for occasional lunches and reminiscences of work at 'CED,' will miss him so. My deepest Condolences to Diane, Cassandra, Don and family. - Posted by: Irene Karpiak (Colleague) on: Feb 14, 2025

My condolences to Diane, Cassandra, Don and the whole extended family on your heartfelt loss, may your precious memories of George help guide you through the days and years ahead. I worked with George indirectly at the UM in Extended Education, he was so kind and always had that warm and welcoming smile that he has. I had the pleasure of meeting his daughter Cassandra at her ceramics studio on Corydon; George passed on a similar trait, she has her dad's same warm and welcoming smile. My deepest sympathies, Michelle Kidd - Posted by: Michelle Kidd (UM colleague) on: Feb 10, 2025
