GEORGE (BILL) WILLIAM BATTERSHILL III

On January 29, 2025, at the age of 70, George William Battershill III (Bill) passed away at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.

Bill was born in Winnipeg on January 12, 1955 to George William Battershill (II) and Helen Battershill (nee Williamson).

Along with his sister Judy, Bill grew up in East Kildonan. He graduated from River East Collegiate in 1973 and would go on to graduate with a degree in computer science from the University of Manitoba in 1976. He worked his entire career in that field, eventually retiring as Information Systems Manager at the Winnipeg Civic Employees Benefits Program in 2019.

In 1976 Bill married Lorie Sawatzky and together the couple had three children, George William (IV), James Andrew, and Andrea Elizabeth. He loved his children dearly and treasured spending time with each of them including chats over coffee, motorcycle rides to grab a burger, and many nights sitting together at Winnipeg Goldeyes games. Bill’s grandsons, Paxton, George and Grayson will fondly remember Opa playtime and his regular cookie and pizza deliveries. Together the family will make sure that his newest grandson, Charlie (born January 22, 2025), will learn all about his Opa, whom he was lucky enough to meet when he was just one day old.

Bill rode his Harley frequently and made many friends from the saddle. He often spoke fondly of his adventure to Sturgis in 2019. He was a proud member of the Widows Sons Masonic Riding Association.

His favourite place in the world was the veranda at Firdale, the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach, which he proudly rebuilt in 2014. His family will always remember him sitting contently on his lounge chair looking out over Lake Winnipeg.

Bill is survived by his wife, his three children and their partners, four grandsons and his sister Judy Battershill.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12th, at 603 Wellington Crescent (First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg).

Thank you to nurse Shawna Castillo and the team at Cancer Care Manitoba for their care this past year.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Cancer Care Manitoba or the Lake Winnipeg Foundation. In addition we encourage everyone who is able to make an appointment at Canadian Blood Services in Bill’s honour. He was a dedicated blood and platelet donor, making 373 donations over the course of his life.

We love you Dad.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Bill(Merc) was a close friend to Deen and myself. Bill and I rode many times together in the Interlake area and went together to Sturgis in 2019. I'll miss meeting you in Gimli for tea at the Flatlander. You will be missed... - Posted by: Martin Pinchbeck and Deen Wilson (Friend) on: Feb 11, 2025

  • Eugene and I spent many fridays overseeing the delivery of cookies from gunn’s bakery to Bill’s grandson, George,. George would say “0pa” and run to get his sweet treat. While George enjoyed his cookie we would spend time talking with Bill about any number of topics. We were impressed at his knowledge about so many things. Bill will be greatly missed by his family and by us and his grandson George will know him in the shared memories handed down to him by his father and family. Our deepest condolences to all Eugene and Barbara Kozera - Posted by: Barbara kozera (Mother of bill’s son’ partner, catherine) on: Feb 11, 2025

  • Bill was an empathetic and thoughtful leader at WCEBP, always bringing both wisdom and humor to the workplace. I feel fortunate to have shared a brief but meaningful time working under his guidance, where his kindness and laughter left a lasting impact. His presence will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Jonathan Seah (Colleague) on: Feb 09, 2025

  • I worked with Bill for many years at the Winnipeg Civic Employee Benefits Program. We also saw each other at Starbucks ever so often after he retired. Thanks for many random talks and the advice over the years. - Posted by: Lan Vu (Former coworker) on: Feb 08, 2025

  • My heartfelt sympathy to everyone. His family was extremely important to him, I heard many stories, told with love. Bill and I spent 30+ years working together at EBB. He was a great mentor and we worker very well together with the system. I have missed our many conversations since we both retired, even though I was known to “kick” him out of my office so I could get some work done. He loved to talk computers and programs. Rest in peace Bill. - Posted by: Trin Willetts (Co-worker and friend) on: Feb 08, 2025
