It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Max Franz Quatember on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
Max was born on October 3, 1934 in Gablonz, Germany. At a young age he learned how to “fend for himself’ due to the changing times in Germany. One of his first loves was buying and selling cars.
Max met a beautiful girl named Sonnihild and they were married in Karlsruhe, Germany on October 1, 1965.
They started their adventure together by moving to Canada in 1967. They purchased the family home in 1968 and raised their sons Andy and Oliver there.
Max had no problem finding work in Winnipeg. His first job was at Bay Bronze in 1968 and “moonlighted” as a maintenance man at his Brother-In-Law’s Bakery. Then, in 1976 he started work at Woodland Supply and stayed there until health issues caused him to take an early retirement in 1992.
Max’s greatest love was the cottage that Sonnhild and he bought in Minaki, Ontario. Every weekend they loaded the car, kids, dog and Grandma and off they went! Max enjoyed going back to Germany to visit family but Canada was home.
Max is survived by his sons, Andy and wife Elizabeth, Oliver and wife, Kathryn; grandchildren, Mallory and Quinn. Brother, Adolf Quatember in Germany, sisters-in-law, Lilo Wegner, Renata Rossow, Mary Wegner; and Brother-in-law, Eckhart Wegner and numerous nieces and nephews. Max was predeceased by his wife, Sonnhild; his Parents, brothers, Rudy and Fritz, sisters, Krista and Gertrude; Sisters-in-Law, Inge and Elsa; and Brother-in-law, Lou Wegner.
Many Thanks to Dr Kristin Harris, Tess Grinham and the Homecare staff.
Donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Diabetes Association.
Service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday March 1 at Green Acres Funeral Home.

We are very sorry for your loss. We remember many great times spent with Max and Sonni both in the bakery and going out together to the German Club. We also remember Christmas family dinners when all the children were small. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Renate Rossow (Sister-in-law) on: Feb 25, 2025
