It is with deep sadness but with so many joyful memories that the family announces the peaceful passing of Walter on March 15, 2025, at Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba, at the age of 99.

Walter was born on March 7, 1926 to Ilko and Patricia Dankewych in Cherniiv, Ukraine. He grew up on a mixed farm with 5 sisters and a brother. At 16 he joined the Ukrainian army where he was trained as a communications officer. In 1945 he was taken captive by the English army, and sent to a prison camp in Rimini, Italy. After 2 years in a prison camp, he was released to a work camp in Edinburg, Scotland. There he worked as a farmhand and truck driver for 1 ½ year. Later he was released to Manchester, England, where he worked in a cotton factory, iron factory, and finally as a double decker bus conductor. He met his wife Amelia in Oldham, England after a friend introduced them. Walter and Amelia were married in Oldham, England in 1952. They immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1954.

In Canada, Walter worked as a leather cutter, sewer, and marker to support his family. Walter loved to sing and sang in the Millenium/ Dunka Ukrainian Choir for many years. Walter and Amelia had 4 children: Lydia, Sonja, Walter and Jeannette. Walter was predeceased by all his siblings, and also his beloved wife of 67 years, Amelia, and daughter Lydia.

He leaves to mourn his children: Sonja, Walter (Terrina), Jeannette (Randall), son in law Axel, along with 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Dr. Taras Babick, and Dr. Andrea Babick for taking care of Dad’s medical needs, and helping him to live a long, healthy life.
