LARRY CLARK

August 29, 1937 - April 4, 2025

Peacefully, and with dignified care, Larry Clark passed away from this life on the evening of April 4, 2025.

The memories of the man that many knew as 'Clarkey' are plenty in number, cherished by his loving wife Dolores; sons, Michael and Christopher; daughter-in-law Carol; granddaughters, Megan, Shelby, Mackenzie, Morgan; and great-grandchildren, Cameron, Oliver, and Lucas.

Larry grew up in Winnipeg's North End, the eldest son of six. His primary career began in 1956, with the old mechanical exchanges of the Manitoba Telephone System, ending his 36-year career at the management level in 1992. He was active in the Manitoba Telephone Pioneers of America, Chapter 50, providing countless volunteer hours to charity initiatives and telecommunications requirements for events such as the Manitoba Open.

Volunteerism continued into retirement, with Dolores joining Larry for the Pan-Am Games in 1999, the Winnipeg Jazz Festivals, and Brier curling, to name a few. Curling was a favourite winter pastime, as well as cross-country skiing. He took up jogging in the late 70s, crossing the finish line over a dozen times in the Manitoba Marathon. He carried the Olympic torch for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, somewhere near Moosomin, Saskatchewan. He added biking to his fitness mix in the 90s, riding his bike from Winnipeg to Los Angeles in 1995, in support of Habitat for Humanity. He also slung his hammer for the charity, including the 1993 build on Dufferin Avenue, alongside former US President Jimmy Carter.

Music always had a special place in Larry's heart. A Charlie Parker fan, Larry took up the tenor saxophone later in life. He sang in church choirs, beginning as a youngster in St. John's Cathedral, and eventually at St. Stephen's Anglican Church in East Kildonan. He made numerous contributions of time and effort at St. Stephen's, from caretaker duties to Rector's Warden. His faith and community involvement included his time as a Freemason at the East Kildonan Masonic Temple.

One of Dad's favourite places was the family cabin at Bird Lake, which he built in the early 60s. There were projects aplenty, and plenty of fun, from fishing to waterskiing. One of his favourite jogging routes followed the road to Osis Lake. He built a redwood strip canoe in the family basement on Matinee Bay that saw plenty of lake time, a canoe that was also paddled on the Red River for Winnipeg's 100th celebrations in 1974.

The family wishes to extend its sincere thanks to the staff at the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation of your choosing to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, and the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.

  • I met Larry through Art Metz Contract Interiors. Such a kind man and fun to talk to. I remember when he won the classic car, buying the ticket at the site where Habitat for Humanity was building a home. If memory serves me right, he bought one of the last raffle tickets, if not the last ticket, but I do remember that it was the last day you could buy a ticket. Knowing that I had a classic car, he asked me for my advice on how/where best to sell it. The first thing I told him was; don’t sell it in Manitoba because there are so many classic cars here. Sell it on E-Bay or in the U.S. because you’ll get more money for it. I bumped into him one day when his memory had first started failing, but we still had a great conversation. When I brought up Art Metz Contract Interiors and the car, he remembered me. My sincere condolences to all family and friends. • I met Larry for the first time at the 1993 Jimmy Carter Habitat Build. Again two years later as we shared a Highway on our way to Los Angeles during the 1995 Cycle of Hope. I was 35 and Larry in his mid 60’s. I remember saying I sure hope I can do this when I turn 65. Well I’m here now and no way will I be doing that again. Rest in peace Larry. - Posted by: Craig Gillon (Fellow cyclist) on: Apr 12, 2025
