FRANK HORNUNG

May 1929 – March 2025

Frank Hornung of Winnipeg, MB, passed into his eternal life on Saturday March 29, 2025.

A gentleman, a dancer, singer, linguist, joke teller, a thoughtful and honest man who loved his family above all. A man with a keen sense of right and wrong, high expectations of others, but no higher than those he set for himself. An immigrant, who accepted that preparing a better life for himself and his family meant sacrifice without excuses. This was his highest call to duty. We hope to carry forward his beliefs and values.

Mourning his loss are his children Gary (Bonnie) Hornung, Darlene (Alfred) Kailer; grandchildren Mark (Allyson) Hornung and their children, Alexis and Cole; Andrea (Ian) Melnychuk and their children, Kinley and Carson. Special family members Barbara (Alan) Zaporzan, Norbert Hansch and family, and Ilse Hansch-Pflug and family will feel his loss with us.

Dad was predeceased by his parents Franz and Anna Hornung, his siblings Maria Rauth, Stefanie Barthel, his Uncle Peter and Aunt Mary Hornung, and his best friends Ernst and Gerda Hansch. More recently, Frank endured the loss of Ursula, his beloved wife and life-partner of 67 years. Mere months later that of his grandson, Eric Hornung.

We are sure they were all waiting with open arms and huge smiles at Heaven’s Gate to welcome him as he came through.

The extended Hornung-Kailer families appreciate the expressions of sympathy and condolences received. A private family Funeral Mass, with interment to follow, will be celebrated.

The Fire and Paramedic Services responders, and the Victoria Urgent Care Hospital 4th Floor Doctors and Nurses are most warmly appreciated for their gentle and professional demeanor shown to Frank in his last week of life.

Our biggest ‘Thank-you’ to the Sterling House management and staff for their assistance and generosity as dad adapted to the Assisted Living environment. To dad’s many friends at Sterling House, our thanks for your caring and welcoming acceptance of our dad.

Frank has run his race, fought the good fight, and kept the faith. May he now Rest in Peace. May his life be a blessing to us all. “Eines ist sicher, wir sehen uns wieder. Ruhe in Frieden.”

  • Garry and Darlene, I'm not sure if you even remember me. My parents, Paul and Anne Schlechter were friends with your Mom and Dad in their younger years when we lived on Kennedy Street and your family lived a few blocks away. I recall your Dad helping me through the tough months after my Dad passed away in 1967 at 46 years of age. He was a great strength for us at that time.
