Helga Guenter was born in Curitiba, Brazil, to parents Jakob and Katja Goerz. At the age of six months, her parents decided to move to Germany to farm. The Goerz family experienced the ravages of the Second World War and became refugees. In 1948 at the age of nine, the family immigrated to Canada and settled on a farm near Snowflake, Manitoba.
Helga got her education in Snowflake and in Winnipeg, graduating as an RN from the St. Boniface School of Nursing in 1962.
Helga married her great love, Wilhelm Guenter in 1971 and they had two children: a son, Jon William in 1973, and a daughter, Monica Dori in 1974.
At the age of 86 years, after a full and enriching life, Helga passed away peacefully with her closest family surrounding her. She was predeceased by both of her parents, her oldest brother Dietmar and her brother-in-law Len Janzen.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband Wilhelm of 53 years, her son Jon (wife Charlene and daughters, Eryn and Abby), her daughter Monica (husband Philip Burns and son Rockland), her five siblings and partners, numerous nephews and nieces, and many dear friends.
The family is very thankful for the excellent care that Helga received from Dr. R. Visser, Dr. I. Chambers, Dr. D. Eyolfson, and all the nurses during the last few months of her life.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 926 Garfield Street, Winnipeg. Interment at Sargent Avenue Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Mennonite Central Committee.
