On May 12, 2025, Heather Friesen passed away at Grace Hospital after a short illness. The daughter of Pauline and Don Bird, she was born in Winnipeg and lived here most of her life.
Heather worked for Winnipeg School Division 1, retiring as a librarian at the teacher resource centre. She was noted for her commitment to and work for several courts of the United Church of Canada and was active throughout her life in Sturgeon Creek and later Prairie Spirit United Church congregations, serving on committees and as a choir member.
Her lifelong passion was refugee support. She was a leader supporting many refugee families in her home congregation and throughout Winnipeg. For many years she chaired the Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council and served as a member of the United Church of Canada National Refugee Committee.
In 2006 Heather married Ben Friesen, also of the church choir, and they enjoyed 15 fine years together. Throughout her life Heather was a strong supporter of her sister, Bev Bird, coaching Bev and friends for Special Olympics.
Heather was predeceased by Ben, Bev and her parents. She is survived by stepchildren Gregory and Sharon Friesen.
A celebration of Heather’s life will be held at Prairie Spirit United Church, 207 Thompson Drive on Wednesday, May 28th at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception and later interment of ashes. Livestream service will be available through a link on the Prairie Spirit United Church website - prairiespirituc.org
Donations to celebrate her life can be made to Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council (Welcome Place), which has helped refugees succeed in Manitoba for more than 50 years.
