ARTHUR JOHN BURGESS

1930 - 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandpa, and great-grandpa on May 8, 2025 at the age of 94.

Art was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Grace; his daughter Cathy; granddaughter Vicki; brothers Bill (Lillian) and Ed; and sister Helen (Gerry). He will be deeply missed by his sons Brian (Rita), Brad, Don (Heather), and Jim; son-in-law Tim; grandchildren Ken (Jessica), Chrissy (Peter), Amanda (Felipe), Erin (Bryce), Alison, Elizabeth (Eric), and T.J.; great-grandchildren Jacob, Kennedy, Jade, Catherine, and Charles; sister Joan; and sister-in-law Jeannie.

Art was born in Winnipeg on November 15, 1930, to Arthur and Nellie Burgess. He married Grace Slamp on November 12, 1955, and they raised their family in Winnipeg. Art worked at Marshall Wells Wholesale from 1948 until 1987, then at EMCO Supply until his retirement in 1996. After his daughter Cathy was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1995, he and Grace raised her children.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening and camping with his family during his younger years. He was a dedicated hunter and fisherman for over 70 years, continuing to take trips with his sons and grandsons well into his 80's. When the hunting and fishing seasons were over, he filled his time with woodworking in his garage, making furniture and yard decorations for his family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Center and the Grace Hospital for their care over the past several months, Pastor Richard Beinert for his visits and prayers, and Corinne for her friendship.

A memorial service will take place at St. James Lutheran Church, 871 Cavalier Drive on May 20th at 10:00 a.m., interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.

In lieu of towers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba Research Institute or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
