NADIA HORTA

(YANCHUK)

April 3, 1936 – May 31, 2025

Born on April 3, 1936, a strong and vibrant woman passed away on Saturday May 31, 2025, at the age of 89.

Nadia was predeceased by her husband Bob in 2018 and her son Fred in 2021.

She is lovingly remembered by her son Donnie (Katherine); grandson Matthew (Kelsey); great grandson Lewis; as well as Katherine’s sons Liam and Sean; her daughters Irene, Lydia and Sandra and their families. Nadia will be missed by many dear friends and family members whose companionship she appreciated so much.

Nadia was raised near Dryden by her parents Eva (Chalkowski) and Steve Yanchuk, alongside her siblings Wally, Joe, Laverne, Bill, Liz and Lucy. Never afraid of a challenge, Nadia lived her adult life with courage, generosity and a strong work ethic. She worked a variety of jobs (while raising her children) and was an entrepreneur, opening Yum Yum ice cream shoppe and Sabra Inn restaurant. More recently, Nadia enjoyed doing food demonstrations at grocery stores; the store managers said she could sell anything.

Nadia’s time and energy went into her family, friends, home and yard. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and creating, often self-taught. Her perogies were perfectly tender pillows of potato, cheese and love; we will cherish her last batch. Nadia’s hands were never still and bore the evidence of her hard work over the years. She enjoyed music and travel, particularly family trips to Europe and Hawaii, and was an animal lover. She adored her faithful cat Chevy. Most importantly, Nadia loved fiercely and always told us how much she loved us. We will miss her.

Arrangements in the care of Cropo Funeral Home, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg, (204) 586-8044. A private gathering will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • So very sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I am the daughter of Lorraine Thompson who lived at #18. I remember babysitting you and Freddy on a few occasions and chasing you both with a wet facecloth. Lol If she knew she would have been mad. Lol Also she bred her male chihuahua with my friends female chihuahua and for that she was promised pick of the litter. She let me pick the one I wanted and said I could have it. So very kind of her. Also I remember having a girls trip with her Sandra my mom and myself to visit her brother in Dryden. We were traveling down a dark road and it had started snowing and a moose came out onto the road and she swerved to miss it and we ended up in the ditch. No one was hurt and a semi pulled us out. I still remember the sound of her voice and her laugh. I loved your mom and I know she loved me as well. I hope this brought a smile to your faces. Again my sympathies. - Posted by: Lucille Sigmar (Neighbour from Brebeuf.) on: Jun 07, 2025
