Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROSE WASYLIW
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rose Wasyliw (nee Strilkiwski).
She is lovingly remembered by son Douglas (Phyllis), granddaughters, Anastasia (Evan), Alexandra (Philip), and Jillian (Aidan); grandson Jordan (Julie), great-grandsons, William, Asher and Caleb, numerous friends, as well as many Strilkiwski and Wasyliw family members. She was predeceased by her husband John, son Kenneth and daughter-in-law Laverne, her father and mother Dmetro and Mary Strilkiwski, brother-in-law Bill, sister-in-law Grace, and brother Albert Strilkiwski.
Rose was born on a farm near Barrows, Manitoba and raised on the family farm near Ethelbert, MB. She was the eldest of five children and assumed much child care and farm duties. This was the beginning of her strong, lifelong work ethic. She left the farm at a very young age to move to Winnipeg for work.
She married, John, the love of her life, in November, 1948 in Winnipeg. After the wedding ceremony, they rented a Greyhound bus and took the entire wedding party and friends to a traditional country wedding celebration in Rhodes Hall, not far from Ethelbert. That celebration was the talk of the area for many months afterwards.
Rose worked in several restaurants before working as a cleaner with various companies. She later became a cleaner at Red River College for 25 years working there until her retirement. Throughout her life she kept a spotless home. Once retired, her strong work ethic led her to work for many years as a house cleaner. She became friends with each family for whom she worked.
For many decades Rose’s hobby was collecting great recipes. She collected thousands of recipes, carefully placed in many scrapbooks. She did not just collect recipes, she used them over the years to create great meals for her family. She and John also went on many car vacations as well as bus tours with friends to many North American locations.
Rose was a devout, lifelong member of the Ukrainian Catholic faith. For many years she and John volunteered at St Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church as part of the perogy making crew. She was also very devoted to her family, whom she deeply loved.
Special thanks the nursing staff and health care aides of Extendicare Oakview Personal Care Home for their loving and compassionate caring for Rose.
A viewing will be held on Sunday evening, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A funeral mass will be held at St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St., on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. M. Khomiskyy officiating, reception to follow. Pallbearers are Anna and Evan Watts, Jordan and Jillian Wasyliw, Morley Luhowy, and Terrance Dziadek.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in her memory can be made to St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, or a charity of your choice.

To Doug and family, So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. We phoned back and forth for a few years and I was fortunate to be able to talk with her. I will remember our conversations as we had quite a few family talks and laughs. She lived a long and fruitful life and will be remembered as the nice person she was. Keep her memory close to your heart. Margaret Gardy, Prince George BC - Posted by: margaret gardy prince george b.c. (cousin) on: Jul 14, 2025
