EDITH ANNE TOEWS

May 6, 1925 - June 24, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear sister, Edith Anne Toews, at St. Boniface Hospital on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Dr. Helen A. Toews and many dear relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Abraham H. and Martha S. Toews, brother and sister-in-law, Henry H. Toews and Freda (nee Franke) Toews, sister and brother-in-law, Elfriede (nee Toews) Peters and Henry Peters, sister Ida H. Toews and nephew Paul H. Toews.

Edith was born in Russia on May 6, 1925, and came to Canada with her parents in early infancy. She grew up in North Kildonan and received her Elementary and High School education at Lord Kitchener School. After finishing school, she worked with the van Kirk Decorating Company, making floral sprays and wreaths. She enjoyed this very much. When this company closed, she worked with the Phoenix Property Insurance Company and other property insurance companies until she retired.

Edith’s faith in God was precious to her. She was baptised on confession of faith into the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church in 1944. In 1999, she joined Grace Bible Church where she remained until she passed into glory.

Edith had many interests, including music, art, nature, and travel. A lover of classical music, she especially enjoyed the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, attending many concerts at the MCO and WSO. As a member of WEMS (Winnipeg Early Music Society), she also played the recorder. Art was another of Edith’s great passions. Her travels took her to many of the world’s renowned galleries - Rome, Paris, Dresden, Florence, and St. Petersburg among them. She belonged to the Local Colour art group and dabbled in watercolour, producing some truly creditable paintings.

Edith had a heart for animals and the natural world with all its flora and fauna. She joined wildlife and birding tours, visiting many of the world’s great sanctuaries in Kenya, South Africa and India. She sailed through the Northwest passage among polar bears, from northern Canada to Greenland. She rode on elephants, camels and donkeys, and walked with penguins in Antarctica. She stood in the great pyramid of Giza and marvelled at the Taj Mahal.

The service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2025, at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street with Pastor Wilma Wiens officiating. Viewing prior to service. Interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery following reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MCC or Winnipeg Humane Society. Feed me till I want no more.
