Helga Dora Elvers (née Korsch) - beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend - passed away at Luther Home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on June 20, 2025, after a long life marked by love, sacrifice, and resilience. She was 88 years old.
Born in 1936 in East Prussia, Helga’s early years were shaped by war and displacement. After spending three years in captivity, she escaped Russian forces and fled to Berlin with her parents, Karl and Gertrude, and her brother, Karl Jr. In the mid-1950s, she immigrated to Winnipeg, where she met Peter, her devoted husband of more than sixty years. Together, they built a life grounded in love, perseverance, and hard work.
Helga is survived by her husband Peter; her daughters, Annette (Brian) and Michelle (Sean); and her grandchildren, Michael, James (Sarah), and Andrew. Her love for her granddogs, Toby and Sunshine, was no less fierce than her love for her grandsons. Omi was known for “making it rain,” tossing handfuls of dog treats and delighting in seeing them snuffle up every crumb.
To Helga, family was never defined by blood alone. She had a gift for gathering people - offering care, connection, and a place to belong. If she knew you, it wasn’t long before you became part of her chosen family. That came with birthday cakes baked from scratch, handmade gifts crafted with love, nearly bottomless generosity, and a bond that held fast across years and miles. Her heart always had room for one more.
Despite years of battling congestive heart failure, Helga rallied every time her health faltered, showing grit and determination. She embraced anything that might help her maintain her independence - yoga, aqua-fit, physiotherapy, and slow but determined walks. Though her body grew weaker with each setback, her spirit and strength of character remained unshaken until the end.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025, at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg.

I was fortunate to exercise with this lovely lady over several years, once/week. She was a faithful participant, determined and dignified. It was a pleasure. Sincere condolences to Peter and their family. - Posted by: Nadene Marlatt (Friend) on: Jul 07, 2025

Fond memories of the Elvers at Lake Wanipigow where we both had family cabins. Great times. Condolences and thinking of the family, especially Peter, during this difficult time. - Posted by: Dave Schade (Lake Neighbor) on: Jul 06, 2025
