With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of David “Dave” Sklar on August 17, 2025, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family. Dave was predeceased by his beloved wife and love of his life, Elinor Sklar (Nixon); his mother, Mary Sklar (Pashka); his father, Peter Sklar; and his brother, Mike Sklar.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his three children: Colleen Sklar (Kevin), David Sklar, and Jim Sklar (Kristen); his six adored granddaughters: Ammanda Fitzgerald (Joseph), Hanna Sklar (Ryley), Katrina Sklar, Breanna Sklar, Nettie Wallace, and Grace Wallace; as well as his beautiful great-granddaughter, Penny Fitzgerald. Dave will also be lovingly remembered by his brother Harry Sklar; sisters-in-law Jan Sklar and Judy Nixon (Phil Noonan), and his nieces and nephews: Alan Sklar (Jenn), Jerry Sklar (Heather), Misty Sklar (Mau), and Trevor Sklar.
Born on December 12, 1937, Dave grew up in Elmwood, where he formed many lifelong friendships. Among them, Jim, Art, and Loren remained close friends through the years and will miss him dearly. Dave was kind and gentle, a man of quiet strength who cared deeply for those around him. He worked hard throughout his life, spending his entire career in the engineering department at the Winnipeg Gas Company (later Centra Gas), from 1956 until his retirement in 1997. His dedication, integrity, and work ethic earned him friendship and respect of all who worked with him.
Outside of work, Dave loved camping, fishing and travel. He spent many summers at Big Whiteshell Lake with his family, friends and neighbours, making lasting memories around the fire pit and on the water. After retirement, he and Elinor explored the U.S. by motorhome, searching for the perfect winter retreat eventually finding it in Yuma, Arizona where they became part of a close-knit and cherished community of friends. Dave also had a deep curiosity about the world and a sense of adventure, travelling to many places across the globe.
His legacy is one of love, kindness, and friendship. He was always quick to lend a helping hand, to make you chuckle and making sure everyone he met was treated with the utmost respect. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his generous heart, and the deep impact he had on the lives of those lucky enough to have known him.
A family service will be held in the coming weeks to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave’s memory to the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre or to a charity of your choice.

i worked with Dave at gwg/ centra for over 33 years. He was the best guy you could ever work with. smart, considerate, very fair and he had a great sense of humor. We became very close friends and went camping, golfing, trips to grand forks and socializing. Dave and Elenor were just great to be along with. He and I had a great time together at work and away from work. many happy times at the villa. He always ordered Labat's Lite. We met for coffee after retirement and he was so happy to talk about his grand kids and their dogs. I consider him one of my best friends and will greatly miss him. - Posted by: paul neyron (coworker) on: Aug 25, 2025

Mr. Sklar was truly the definition of a great dad. I first met him as a young teenager, and I feel so fortunate to have shared the past 50 years with him in my life. So many of my best memories are from the Big Whiteshell, where we spent more than 40 summers together. He was always the first to hop in the boat, sit by the bonfire, or crack open a cold beer while listening to some Johnny Cash. He loved adventure, and in recent years we shared many laughs and good times together in Bucerias. I’ll never forget his trademark send-off: “You kids have fun tonight!” What stood out most about Mr. Sklar was his graciousness and kindness. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome, and it was rare to hear him speak an unkind word about anyone. But when he did, if he called someone an asshole you could be sure he was right! He was fun, genuine, and deeply loved, and I will always treasure the joy and warmth he brought into our lives. We are all better people for knowing him. - Posted by: Liz Loewen (Family friend) on: Aug 23, 2025

The Sklars were our Stuart avenue neighbors and my second home - even our phone numbers were one digit apart. So many great memories of Mr. Sklar - the company k cars , motor home , station wagon , the best tool set in the neighborhood ( craftsman red tool cabinet organized) and seeing him in his spot in the living room smiling as we would be in and out of the house . I knew I had “made it “ when I was doing work at Centra gas and was invited to the Nor Villa after work on a Friday. I look back and appreciate we had the best neighbors and friends in the Sklars. Our Condolences and love to you all. Love from Singbeil family. - Posted by: Jason Singbeil (Friend / neighbor) on: Aug 23, 2025
