SHELBY BREKELMANS

1962 - 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Shelby on August 21, 2025, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

She will be remembered by her husband of 40 years, Joe; children: Ashley (Peter Nielsen), Stephanie (Henry Hong), and Nicole; sister, Lorena (Frank Low); as well as many other friends and family members. She was predeceased by her parents, Wayne and Anita Wilson.

Shelby was born in Winnipeg on April 6, 1962. She met the love of her life, Joe, at the University of Manitoba while they were both working towards bachelor’s degrees in computer science. After stepping away from her career to raise her three beautiful daughters, she went back to school to earn her Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certificate. She worked as a substitute Educational Assistant for Pembina Trails School Division and volunteered with the English (ESL) conversation group at Mary Mother of the Church parish.

Shelby was an accomplished baker and loved her many creative hobbies, especially scrapbooking. She was a deeply loved person who always had a handmade card or a well-placed pun for every occasion.

We would like to thank the doctors and nurses of CancerCare Manitoba, as well as the staff at St. Boniface Hospital.

Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, September 2 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with interment and reception to follow.

  • Dear Joe and family, Our deepest condolences at this time of loss. We were so saddened to hear of Shelby's illness and her ultimate passing. Although she was a quiet soul, she exuded love for her family! She will be deeply missed - which is the result of being deeply loved. You're in our prayers as you adjust to this new phase of your life - without her physical presence. May your faith be a comfort at this time - with the knowledge that she has entered into the fullness of life. Love & hugs to all. • Joe I am so sorry for your loss. You have so many wonderful memories to cherish in your 40+ years together. Hold them deep in your heart and may they help you get through all the difficult moments. - Posted by: Stacey Erlendson (University friend) on: Aug 28, 2025

  • Dear Joe and family, Sending our condolences doesn’t quite seem enough. Bob has such fond memories of meeting Shelby, his tiny, blonde, precocious niece, on her first visits to Beardmore. Over the years we’ve both enjoyed our visits to Winnipeg, watching Shelby grow up, attending your wedding and having you both visit us in the Toronto area, as a couple and later with your beautiful family. Our trips to Winnipeg were made complete by visiting you, Shelby and your girls in your home. We were always made to feel not just welcome, but appreciated as part of your extended family, which is how we feel about you. With great sympathy and much love. . . . . • Shelby will be sorely missed. A skilled crafter, a pun master extrordinaire, and a sweet and gentle soul, Shelby was a much valued participant of our Brekelmans womwn's annual weekend gathering at Bluebird's Nest. She was an exceptionally loving and devoted wife and mother as evidenced by the health and happiness she so clearly brought to her home. My heart is with you Joe, Ashley, Stephanie and Nicole. The down side of having such a great sourse of love in your life is that the loss and grief is proportionately great. My deepest condolences to you all. - Posted by: Cathy Hudek (Sister in law) on: Aug 26, 2025

  • Joe, I remember both you and Shelby from our computer science days at the U of M. So sorry to hear about Shelby. My condolences to you and the family. - Posted by: Wendy Fonseca-Holt (School Friend) on: Aug 24, 2025

  • So very sorry to hear about Shelby’s passing. My heart goes out to the whole family at this very difficult time. Shelby was always so present for her family, the school, and the community. We had a daughter the same age, and watched our daughters through the years at Linden Meadows. We also saw each other at church events. She impacted so many lives, but I know mostly her family. - Posted by: Irene Okumura (Friend / neighbour) on: Aug 23, 2025

  • So very sorry to read this. Our children attended LM together and I worked with Shelby for years. Sincere sympathy to the entire family. She was a very kind lady and I enjoyed knowing her. - Posted by: Charisse Campbell (Linden Meadows) on: Aug 23, 2025

  • I was saddened to hear of Shelby’s passing. She was a crafting friend of mine. She loved showing me her “punny” cards. We would have long conversations about weddings coming up, house renovations, trips taken and of course new crafty things. I will miss her. Sending my condolences to her family. - Posted by: Marilyn Whatman (Friend) on: Aug 23, 2025
