Robert (Bob) Checkwitch passed away August 5, 2025, at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC. Predeceased by his parents and brother Stephen, he is survived by his brother Alan (Marge), sons Christopher (Kristine), and Benjamin (Alison), daughter Jennifer (Ron), grandchildren Cole, Annie, and Julia.
Born in Winnipeg, MB, he attended Isaac Newton High School, obtained his BA from the University of Manitoba in 1963 and BEd in 1968. He taught in Winnipeg for several years, and then, during the 1970's, established and managed the art publishing company Great Grasslands Graphics. A number of years later, he returned to education, serving as principal in schools in northern Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec. An accomplished artist, his paintings hang in homes and galleries across the country. While in the north, he wrote and distributed the five book Green Star Lake series for young adults. He wanted his students to read stories that related to their lives. Teacher, entrepreneur, artist, and author, Bob was creative, intellectually curious, outgoing, and loved interacting with people.
If so desired, donations in his memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders.

My condolences To all of his family. He was a unique character. Strong but fair and always willing to listen to what somebody had to say. He had a somewhat unique way of looking at the world and always inquiring and curious. His artistic streak may have contributed to how he looked at the world. I am very fortunate to have had him in my life, as a teacher (Canadian history!) A business partner and a friend and co-owner of an island. I learned much and shared some interesting times. I'm sorry I didn't have the opportunity to see him again. With my sympathy and some good memories, Regards Urmas - Posted by: Urmas (Friend/business partner) on: Sep 01, 2025
