JAMES DESMOND BEAN

1945 - 2025

It is with deep sadness that the Bean family announce the passing of James Desmond Bean on September 9, 2025, at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg.

Desmond was born on July 29, 1945, and had recently celebrated his 80th birthday. Desmond was predeceased by his parents, James and Doreen Bean (Clements). Desmond was the eldest sibling of four children and survived by his sister Pamela O’Dowda (Jack) and brothers, Robert Bean (Karen Hunter), Roger Bean (Lisa Olench), nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Desmond was born in Northampton, England and immigrated to Canada as a baby, originally to Swift Current, Saskatchewan with his parents. While he was still quite young his family moved to Inkster Boulevard in Winnipeg and then later to Beaverbrook Street in River Heights, where he attended Grant Park High School before his post-secondary education. Desmond graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Master of Science in Physics (honours) in 1967. He then started a challenging technical career that led him to work at United Aircraft of Canada, Pratt and Witney of Canada, Kedward, Kawa and Associates, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Quantic Laboratories, and Linear Systems locally in Winnipeg, before retiring in 2009. In his younger years Desmond had been an avid private pilot, and had owned several aircraft over the years, with his favourite being his Bellanca Cruisemaster.

It is with great appreciation and thanks that the family recognizes Desmond’s lifelong friend Robert (Bob) Robinson for his great support and friendship with Desmond over these many decades. Bob faithfully made weekly visits to see Desmond from out of town for many years when Desmond’s mobility was failing and continued to visit Desmond and lift his spirits weekly until the last. Desmond always looked forward to Bob’s visits on Friday afternoons.

A family service will be held for Desmond on October 3, 2025, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, at 2:00 p.m. followed by interment. Please let the family know in advance if you would like to attend and share a memory of Desmond, at 204-807-8234, so that we can plan accordingly, thank you.
