It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Luis Alberto Ferreira Cabral of Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 11, 2025, while visiting Lisbon, Portugal.
Born in Livramento, Sao Miguel, Portugal, on February 21, 1965. Luis became a proud Canadian after immigrating in 1985 but also still maintained great pride in his Portuguese roots. He was a hard worker who did road construction for the City of Winnipeg for 30 years. For a few years while working for the City, he also served as the caretaker for Holy Rosary Church. This dual role was a testament to both his strong work ethic and faith. As Luis's health began to decline in 2019, he stopped working until he retired in February 2025.
Luis’s greatest passion was his family. He was a devoted husband and loving father who worked tirelessly to provide a stable home for his children, giving them more than he had growing up. Family occasions like birthdays and holidays were not to be missed, and he gave generously of his time and talents to anyone who needed help. In his later years, Luis found joy in gardening and his puppy Leao. He also loved to make his own wine and moonshine, following the traditions of his father. As a soccer fan, he was a loyal supporter of his favorite team, Benfica.
Everyone who knew Luis will remember his infectious laughter, his silly jokes, his generous spirit, and his genuine friendships. He touched the hearts and lives of more people than he ever realized.
As his health further declined in the last couple of years, he focused on his family and close friends, making sure his loved ones would be taken care of. His last trip to Sao Miguel was a cherished one, where he created lasting memories and fulfilled his dreams of visiting Lisbon, Fátima, and the legendary Benfica Stadium.
Luis is survived by his loving wife, Heather; son Kevan and his wife Courtney and grandson Liam; son Philip and his wife Briauna.
He also leaves behind his brother Carlos, brother José and his wife Maria; sister Isabel and her partner Luciano; sister Fatima; father-in-law Elwyn; sister in-law Marina; brother-in-law Dennis and his partner Collene; brother-in-law Rodney and his wife Gigi; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and seven godchildren. He was predeceased by his father, Manuel; his mother, Maria da Conceiçao; his mother-in-law Georgina; his sister and brother-in-law Adriana and John.
Visitation will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street on Friday, October 3 at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Celebration of Life at 11:30 a.m. The burial will take place at Assumption Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to a charity of your choice in Luis’s name.
