Simon Brandstetter passed away peacefully at Brandon Regional Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
The funeral service for Simon was held at Brockie Donovan Chapel on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Simon was born on December 24, 1929, in Spitzau, Germany, the second son of Josef and Marie Brandstetter. From a young age, he knew the meaning of hard work—hauling water by hand, tending animals, and helping feed his large family. At only 15, he was drafted into the war and later spent time as a prisoner of war. After his release, Simon joined the police force before deciding to start a new life in Canada. In 1952, at age 24, he immigrated to Manitoba, working for the Jackson and Kohut farms. He remained close friends with the Kohut family all his life. Simon later began a long and dedicated career as a charge nurse at the Brandon Psychiatric Hospital. In Canada, he met the love of his life, Arlene Poole, with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage filled with devotion, laughter, and travel—especially trips to Germany to visit family. Although Simon retired in 1984, he never stopped working. He grew large, beautiful gardens that fed many, built three houses, and managed 13 suites. He also spent countless hours at his great friend, Walter te Bokkel’s farm, driving grain trucks, combining a few acres, and helping wherever needed. The Bokkel family became like his own. Simon loved bridge, cribbage, deer hunting, and fishing—summer and winter alike. His favourite hunting spot was by an old car in the Bokkel pasture, soon to be marked with a commemorative plaque in his honour.
He was one of nine children and will be deeply missed by his wife, Arlene; his brother and two sisters; one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, two nieces, and a great-nephew.
A funeral service will be held in Germany at a later date.
