DR. GEORGE CHUCHMAN

May 15, 1946 - October 12, 2025

Dr. George Chuchman passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at St. Boniface Hospital.

He is deeply mourned by his wife Irene, his daughters, Olesia (Jason) and Andriana (Adam), and his son Iyvan (predeceased), grandchildren, Valya, Nina, and Mateo, his sister Martha (Lorne), his brother Andrew (Katrusia), his sister Roma (Marvin), his sister-in-law Slava, his nephew Danylo (Amy) and his nieces, Tamara, Talia (Jesse), Alexandra (Charlotte), as well as numerous family members in Canada, the USA, Australia, and Ukraine.

George’s parents, Maria and Ivan Chuchman, met as university students and married in Lviv, Ukraine, in the 1940s. As the war front approached the city, they joined thousands of wartime refugees unwilling to remain under Soviet occupation and ended up in a displaced persons’ camp in Germany, where George was born. Sponsored to immigrate, the young family arrived in Canada in 1949, settling in Bissett, Manitoba. George’s father worked in the gold mine, and with their savings, the family later acquired a laundry business. By age four, George was already helping with laundry deliveries, reflecting his industrious spirit. In 1952, the family moved to Winnipeg, where George attended St. Nicholas (IHMS) and St. Paul’s Schools. A devoted and generous older brother, he was also a voracious reader, known to read and memorize encyclopedias from cover to cover.

George began his studies in Architecture at the University of Manitoba before turning to Economics, earning a BA, BES, and MA. While working on his PhD at the University of Western Ontario, he met his future wife Irene, a Music Education major, at a Halloween party hosted by the Ukrainian Students’ Club.

Settling in Winnipeg, George worked as a senior economist with the Department of Energy and Mines before joining the Department of Economics at the University of Manitoba. Over a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, he advanced from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and served for many years as Associate Head of the Department. His areas of specialization included Applied Microeconomics, Monetary and Financial Economics, Public Finance, Energy Economics, and the Economy of Ukraine. Over the course of his career, his expertise brought him before the National Energy Board, the Manitoba Public Utilities Board, and the Ontario Energy Board, and he consulted widely for governments and private-sector clients.

Following Ukraine’s independence in 1991, George supported the country’s economic transition, teaching courses in financial management and corporate finance in Ukraine. He also served as a technical consultant in programs that assessed Ukraine’s financial systems. His papers on the evolution of financial institutions and economic reform reflected both intellectual rigor and personal commitment to Ukraine’s future.

George was deeply engaged in Winnipeg’s Ukrainian community, serving on the Board of Directors of Carpathia Credit Union for more than 20 years, including terms as President and Vice-President, and on the Board of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation for a decade. He was also a member of the working committee for the Ukraine Credit Union Development Assistance Project for several years, and was actively involved with PLAST and the parish council of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral. His decades of volunteer service reflected a steadfast commitment to Ukrainian cultural and civic life in Canada and abroad.

George was a devoted husband and father, supporting all of his children’s academic and artistic pursuits. This included attending all of their performances, sports games, even travelling to other cities to cheer them on. Among his personal interests, he enjoyed reading, travelling, cooking, windsurfing and watching hockey. George will be remembered for his generosity, intelligence, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.

On Saturday, Octpber 25, 2025 Divine Liturgy at 11:00 a.m. at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. with Fr. Ihor Shved, followed by Panakhyda. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory can be made to Canada-Ukraine Foundation or St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.
