GRACE VELASQUEZ DE LEON

(DAVIES)

Peacefully after a brief illness, Grace passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 95 years. Grace lived a good long life and is remembered for her beautiful smile and hopeful outlook on life.

Grace was predeceased by her husbands: Tomas (1952-1999) and Glynn (2001-2023), her son Frederick and grandson Danny. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Katie, grandchildren, Reggie and Alex, their mother Nora, great-grandchild Aaliyah, her sister Lilia Weber, stepson Owen Davies, long-time family friends, Dave and Carla Yanchyshyn and many nephews and nieces.

Born in the Mountain Province, Philippines, she was the middle child of ten children. Her family fled to the mountains during the Second World War where she survived the bombings and hardships of the jungle. After earning her nursing degree from the University of the Philippines at the age of 21, she married Tomas R. de Leon to whom she was a dedicated wife for 47 years. She started her nursing career in Public Health in the Philippines and when the family immigrated to Winnipeg in 1968, she joined the nursing staff at the Misericordia Hospital. As one of the first Filipino families in Winnipeg, Grace and Tom developed many deep and long-lasting friendships within the Filipino community, especially the St. James Eight and the Phil-Canadian groups. After Tom’s passing, Grace had a second chance at love when she married Glynn Davies. They shared 22 years of happiness.

Grace lived a full life - raising a family while juggling a 37 year nursing career, travelling to many countries and filling her surroundings with beauty from gardening, sewing, jewelry making and decorating. She loved the hula, fashion and dancing. She befriended many people throughout her life journey. She was always loving and gracious – a beautiful person.

Thank you to the staff at Seven Oaks General Hospital for their kind and gentle care of “Nanay” Grace.

Final blessing and cremation has taken place. Funeral mass and a celebration of Grace’s life will be held in May. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Filipino Heritage Scholarship Fund via the Winnipeg Foundation.
