It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dianne Bain of Winnipeg, lovingly surrounded by family at her home, on Friday, March 6, 2026, at age 73.
Dianne will be forever remembered and missed by her husband, Herb Stephen (granddaughter Katie), son, James Gulash (Jodis), grandchildren, Larson and Leah, daughter, Erin Gulash (Doug), brother, Don Bain (Jan), nephews, Marcus and Ryan (great-niece Violet), cousin, Sandra, as well as many cherished friends whom she loved so dearly. Dianne was predeceased by her parents, Jimmy and Helen Bain, and twin brother, David Bain.
Dianne was raised in a loving family, steadily surrounded by proud Scottish roots through music, community and celebrations. At the age of 30, she acquired her grandfather’s bagpipes brought over from Scotland, thus beginning her journey to become a piper. What was a lifelong dream, became a true passion. She was a long-time member of the Pipes and Drums of Manitoba and the pipe bands of the Army Navy Air Force Unit #283 and Unit #60. One of her many highlights was travelling to Switzerland in 1997 to be part of the official pipe band for the World Curling Championships. Dianne encouraged Police Chief Stephen to allow women in the Winnipeg Police pipe band and was proud to be the first woman to play with the band, paving the way for others.
Her love of travel led her to many amazing places throughout the years, although her six trips to Scotland were always her most memorable. A big piece of her heart will always remain there.
Dianne had various jobs throughout the years, although her 23-year career with the Winnipeg Police Service was her most rewarding. She truly enjoyed her job and the many people she met over the years. Dianne retired in 2012.
Diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2021, she faced her diagnosis with unwavering strength and courage. Dianne leaves behind a legacy built on devotion to family, a passion for life, and a quiet strength and kindness that touched everyone who knew her. Her children and grandchildren were always her pride and joy. Herb, your ever enduring love and support throughout the years made her life complete having you by her side, you were the love of her life.
Dianne was able to brighten even the darkest of days with her positive outlook and wonderful sense of humor that remained until her final moments. Her bright spirit and endless love will be with us until we meet again. Go spread your wings, fly high and breath deeply now Beautiful.
Our heartfelt thank you to the MAiD team for your true compassion and kindness. You helped to make her final journey so peaceful.
In keeping with Dianne’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service.

Dianne and I worked in WPS Quartermaster stores. She was very hard working and dedicated to the WPS. Her dad and my dad also worked together - on the beat -years ago. She loved her family and of course, everything Scottish! I saw her last at the retirement dinner and enjoyed our chat -catching up on what's new and old. My sincere condolences to Herb and to her family. - Posted by: Heather Hogg (Friend from work) on: Mar 15, 2026

Dianne was one of the best coworkers I had the pleasure of working with. She made my short time in Stores fun and truly enjoyable. Her wonderful sense of humor stood out and brought light to the department in a way that wasn’t always common elsewhere. Herb, I’m so sorry for your loss. Please know that she will always be watching over you as your angel. - Posted by: Cheryl Enquist (Co-worker WPS) on: Mar 15, 2026

Dianne was a lovely person and soul mate to my Uncle Herb. My fondest memory is of the trip we all took to Scotland and the cottage we stayed at in Turriff, and the walk we took up her beloved Bennachie. - Posted by: Lorraine Stephen (Niece) on: Mar 14, 2026
