AHMID OMER

August 1, 1956 - March 16, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ahmid Omer on March 16, 2026, at the age of 69, with family by his side.

Ahmid will be lovingly remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family. He loved deeply, gave freely, and found great joy in the people closest to him. His grandchildren, in particular, held a very special place in his heart and brought him endless pride and happiness.

He was a familiar face at many local coffee shops, always choosing to go inside for his coffee—never the drive-through—because he loved running into familiar faces and sharing a quick conversation. Even then, it was only ever a short break. Ahmid never sat still for long, always on the go, the hardest worker we’ve ever known, with dirty hands, a big smile, and an even bigger heart.

Ahmid had a gift for fixing just about anything. Resourceful, determined, and always willing to lend a hand.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Anita; his children, Calvin (Robyn), Natalie, and Hamid (aka AJ); his grandchildren, Sydney (David), Brayden, Christopher, Owen, Arieawna, and Jacob; and his great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Bennet.

He is also survived by his siblings, John (Cathy), Eva, Alec (Mona), Abe, Ilham, Joe (Monica), Fred, Sadie (Eric), Ab (Shirley), and Wayne (Aadila); sister-in-law Ali Hammett and brother-in-law Arie Van Der Waal; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Sobhi (Lutfie); his mother, Saadi; his stepmother, Amnie; his brothers, Sam and Michael; his brother-in-law, Glen; his mother- and father-in-law, Arie and Wilhelmina Van Der Waal; and his brother-in-law, Wayne Hammett.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at the Manitoba Islamic Association, 2445 Waverley Street, Winnipeg, MB at 2:00 p.m. followed by a graveside service at Hodgson Community Cemetery. Followed by a fellowship at the Ukrainian National home in Fisher Branch, MB.

Those we love don't go away,

they walk beside us every day.
