EDWARD (TED) MINTO BAILEY

December 20, 1941 – March 24, 2026

A man of quiet strength, deep humility, and a legendary devotion to his family, Ted passed away in Winnipeg on March 24, 2026, at the age of 84. Ted was the heart of his family and a fixture in the Manitoba agriculture community.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Ted was deeply rooted in the community he loved. Though he and Phyllis spent a few years in Sanford during the 1970s while their daughters were young, Winnipeg was always home. It was the city where they built their life together, surrounded by family and friends that meant everything to them.

His greatest delight was becoming a grandfather. Ted adored each of his grandkids and would phone every Sunday night to get his “driving schedule” so he could participate in their evening activities. Sleepovers, movie nights and annual events like “Disney on Ice” or “Boo at the Zoo” were always planned by him. Annual family trips happened under his guidance, typically involving Palm Springs or Arizona, with a full agenda of exciting events building cherished memories.

Ted, a proud 1966 University of Manitoba alumnus, was a fixture in the rural landscape throughout his career. From his early days at Feed Rite to his role as manager and part-owner of Riverbend Feed Mill in Rosenort, he helped expand the company to several locations to build what would eventually become the Landmark Group. After retiring following the businesses' sale to Maple Leaf Foods in 1999, Ted remained known for his exceptional mentorship and humble leadership. He was deeply dedicated to the farmers and colleagues he served - a commitment honoured with the University of Manitoba Distinguished Service Award in 2011.

His concern for others extended into his philanthropy. Ted and Phyllis were generous supporters of several causes close to their hearts, including a significant contribution to cardiac imaging equipment at St. Boniface Hospital, where their names remain on a plaque as a testament to their desire to help others in their community.

Outside of work, Ted was a "dashing" presence on the golf course and a dedicated athlete who played racquetball in the early morning hours at the University of Manitoba’s Frank Kennedy Centre. A golf fanatic and lifelong member of Southwood Golf & Country Club, Ted served as the club's President in 2002, later joining the respected ranks of the club's past presidents.

Ted was a total family man and the architect of their lake life, teaching his daughters to water-ski, canoe, and drive the power boat. He shared his love for the outdoors in every season, from leading the family on snowmobiling and cross-country skiing adventures to taking his daughters to Banff so the three of them could learn to downhill ski together.

Despite his many successes, Ted remained a man of deep humility. He had a gift for friendship and a quiet way of looking out for the well-being of everyone around him.

Ted was predeceased by the love of his life, Phyllis Margaret Bailey (nee Morlock), in March 2025. Their bond was undeniable; Ted was a man deeply in love, and his devotion to Phyllis, and his care for her well-being, set a beautiful example for his daughters, Tanis and Janelle. He was also predeceased by his sister Barb; and brothers-in-law, John and Dale.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Tanis (Howard) and Janelle (Tom); sister Ruth; brother-in-law Bruce; and Phyllis’ sisters, Beverly and Debbie. "Grandad" will be missed immensely by his deeply adored grandchildren and their families: Janessa and Lourens (parents to Adeline); Kyla and Brent (parents to Timothy); Brennan and Hannah (parents to Vienna); and Nash, Chloe, and Mylo. In his final year, Ted found immense joy in welcoming his three new great-grandchildren into the family.

The family wishes to invite friends and colleagues to celebrate Ted’s life. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Following the service, Ted will be laid to rest beside Phyllis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ted’s memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in honour of his caring spirit and his journey with heart failure.
