GORDON JOSEPH CHEREPAK

1942 – 2026

Gordon Joseph Cherepak was born on September 13, 1942, to Mary Cherepak (nee Schwetz) and Joseph Cherepak. He was the youngest of three children and grew up with his sister Pat (John) and brother David (Mavis) in various towns and farms in the Interlake.

Gord left high school in Grade 11 to join the Air Force and learned many lessons on this path. He realized that education was important and returned to complete high school as a mature student and then went on to university to earn a Commerce degree. He was the first in his family to earn a university degree.

Gord met the love of his life, Arlene Cherepak (nee Cartlidge) in 1965 where he impressed her by making jokes about her last name, “Cartlidge like in your knee” and various other feats of prowess until he won her over.

They married in 1967 and had two children, Michelle and Corinne (Laurie). Gord was a loving husband and father, a kind man who provided for and protected his family. He could always be counted on in a pinch and came through every time.

Michelle and Corinne cherish the many family trips and events including a month long road trip across the US to California, Arizona trips, skiing in Colorado and Montana with friends and family, windsurfing and summers at the cottage. Gord had a great love of gardening vegetables and grew the tastiest tomatoes you could ever enjoy!

He enjoyed curling and was president of the Charleswood Curling Club in the early 90’s making friendships that have spanned the years.

He spent his career in the early years of computing and had the opportunity to see the development of this industry from the 1960’s up until current day. He made lifelong friends during his time at Honeywell and continued to meet up with the “Food Club” right up until his passing.

When Gord and Arlene retired from their careers, they had the opportunity to travel to many places on their bikes including trips to Australia, Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Gord and Arlene continued their love of biking through the years with Gord biking right up until last summer.

Gord was larger than life, always interested in talking to people and getting to know their stories and made friends wherever he went. He loved children and animals. Even with his booming voice, children and animals always sensed his kindness and responded positively.

When his grandchildren Sophie, William and Stella were born, Gord entered his Papa era in full glory. Arlene and Gord had sleepovers, swimming at the Rady Centre and trips to Mexico and Disneyworld. He loved his “pumpkins” with all his heart and they definitely made his heart three sizes bigger.

We will all miss Gord’s presence in our life, his great sense of humour, his optimism and kindness but are thankful that the pain and rigours of aging and disability have ended. His memory is a blessing, and we are better for his time on earth.

Please join us in remembering Gord on Monday, May 4, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.
