Hilda Gayle O’Greysik (nee: Notrhcut), born April 3, 1944, in Maryfield, Saskatchewan, was the youngest of four children born to George and Bernice Northcut. Gayle grew up on the family farm and attended Kola and Maryfield Schools. After graduation, Gayle worked at CIBC in Virden for four years. During that time, she met her future husband, Joe O’Greysik, who was employed by Manitoba Hydro. They married and lived in Brandon briefly before moving to Souris in 1967, when Joe was promoted to District Assistant for Manitoba Hydro. Gayle and Joe went on to have two children. Susan came first, followed by Tim. Gayle was a stay-at-home mom for nine years and enjoyed being involved in the kids’ activities. She coached ball, was a Guide Captain, was involved in figure skating and was a hockey fan.
When the children got a bit older, Gayle was employed at Corrine’s Flowers (owned by Corrine Carlisle) and later at Plaza Petals owned by Bev Somersall. Gayle eventually purchased Plaza Petals in 1995 and later sold it to Debbie Butler. She had a 40 plus year career in the floral industry.
She enjoyed golfing and her many volunteer activities. In 1989, she joined the Glenwood and Souris Library board and the Souris Hospital Auxiliary, and in the 1990s she also joined the St. Paul’s U.C.W., helping to organize many funeral lunches for Unit 3 during her decades long years of service. Gayle loved her community and was surrounded by her life-long friends and family. Gayle and her sister Karen were very close and enjoyed many holidays and visits together. Gayle was also blessed with many friends, her life-long ones were very dear to her: Ruth Smith, Georgie Moreau, Jackie McKenzie, Betty Somersall, Darlene Johnson and Darlia Leslie.
Joe and Gayle were married for 52 years until Joe passed from cancer in 2018. Gayle was also predeceased by her parents, her two brothers, Don and Doug, her sister Karen, her brother-in-law Brian, Joe’s parents, and her brother-in-law Wesley.
Susan married Troy Sambrook. Tim married Maria Barcellona, and they have two daughters, Emily and Kenzie that were the joy of Joe and Gayle’s lives. After Joe’s passing, Gayle lived a quiet life, enjoying her friends and family, and her pet “Miss Kitty”.
A funeral service was held at St. Paul’s United Church, Souris on July 24, 2026 with interment in the Souris-Glenwood Cemetery.
