Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPATRICIA (PAT) SOPHIA LEWAK
Born in Winnipeg, MB to Peter and Jeanne (nee Dynkavitch) Chaikowsky on June 29, 1944; passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Pat leaves behind her loving and dedicated husband, John (Jack) of 60 years; as well as her son, Jonathon; and daughter Jennifer (Olivier Laquerre).
Born and raised in Winnipeg’s North End (Magnus and Prince), this neighborhood girl made good by being one of the first women in her family to attend university and graduate from Misericordia School of Nursing in 1962. From then on, she worked as a public health nurse and at various hospitals throughout her career.
There, she met the love of her life, John, and they married in 1966 on July 16th. Sincere love and friendship of 60 years together cannot be expressed in a simple sentence. It’s in watching over someone that you care about day after day, trying to make them smile through pain and suffering, or just to let them know that you are there. That is real love.
In the years to come, she became a mother to Jonathon, and then to Jennifer. She was an active mother who encouraged her children’s talents and skills, and was proud to see them excel in their lives.
Pat was a creative force to be reckoned with, having entered numerous craft competitions. She also enjoyed her time with sewing, quilting, making jewelry, and genuinely appreciating the beautiful things in life.
She was generous to a fault and would give the clothes off her back if someone said they needed them. She volunteered her time for outreach kitchens and enjoyed many years as a tour guide at Dalnavert House Museum.
As a woman of faith, she was an active member in St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, taking part in the Woman’s League and volunteering at the Shrine of Bishop and Martyr Blessed Vasyl Velychosky CSsR.
Pat was predeceased her mother, Jeanne Chaikowsky in 1980; her father, Peter Chaikowsky (Acme Venetian Blinds) in 2004; and her brother, Theodore (Ted) in February 2026.
The Lewak family would like to sincerely thank all the friends and family who visited Pat during her last few months. They would also like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital for the care and attention that they were able to provide for her.
Services will be held at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Avenue, at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, with reception to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to The Welcome Home, 188 Euclid Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R2W 2X4; e-transfer: wehome24@ outlook.com.

We are all going to miss Pat. She and Diane always made sure we got together at least once a year. She was a good person, and I am sad to know she has left us. She has now begun a new journey. Linda - Posted by: Linda Benson (Sister! Luncheon Group) on: Jul 19, 2026

I knew Pat through her brother Ted. She was 8 years older than me and was already married so I saw her briefly when she came home to visit the family and at the occasional family function or other occasions. I was sad to hear of her passing. All the sympathy and condolences to her remaining family. REST IN PEACE PAT Wayne Ledwos - Posted by: Wayne Ledwos (Friend) on: Jul 18, 2026
