WALTER HAROLD SYCH It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the age of 79, at St. Boniface General Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Isabel; sisters, Elsie Beyak and Helen Mazur; son-in-law Brian McGurk; and nieces, Shirley Mariash and Barbara Gregorchuk. Leaving to cherish his memory, loving wife Kay of 58 years; sisters, Bernice Gregorchuk; sons, Edward (Linda) of Calgary, Brian (Caren); daughter Marilyn McGurk; grandchildren, Jared, Kyle, Ian (Pam), Shane (Heather), Brett, Kristen, Brandon and Drew; great-granddaughter Cailin McGurk and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Walter was born on July 23, 1926 and resided in Winnipeg his entire life. He joined the Canadian Army at an early age and served in the Canadian Infantry Corps. from 1944 to 1946. After his discharge, he met and married Kay in 1947. Until his retirement, Walter had a long and fulfilling career as a pattern designer in the garment industry. While his children were young, Walter enjoyed attending Edward and Brian's hockey games during the winter months. Later on in his life, he also enjoyed watching his grandchildren play hockey. It was during the early years that he developed a profound love for the game that remained with him his entire life. Walter could always be found watching Hockey Night in Canada and rarely missed an NHL playoff game. Walter also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. His favourite past time was going to his cottage in Lac du Bonnet during the summer months where the family often gathered. He worked hard to provide his family with a lovely summer cottage. Walter was also an avid angler and enjoyed spending time on the water whenever possible. Some of the most memorable times with Dad/Grandpa at the cottage were the little things such as sharing stories underneath the stars on the deck and sitting around the campfire. Walter was a gentle, warm, kind and considerate person. His generosity, commitment, love and devotion to his family and friends are those of which we all should aspire to follow. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses on 5E at St. Boniface General Hospital and to the home care workers for their compassionate care. Viewing will be held on Thursday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, 264 Donwood Dr. Interment will follow in Holy Ghost Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walter's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord and let the perpetual light shine upon him CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
