HELEN (SHABAGA) SYROTIUK (nee EWASIUK) Peacefully on Monday, April 7, 2008, at the Ashern Personal Care Home, Helen Syrotiuk, aged 90 years of Gypsumville, MB. Helen was born on August 31, 1917 and raised in St. Martin, MB. In 1941, she married Peter Shabaga and in Gypsumville they raised their three children. Dad was a commercial fisherman and Mom spent three winters on Lake Winnipeg cooking for him, her children and the crew. In 1960 they built, owned and operated Ridgeway Lunch and Service on Highway 6 until 1971 when they sold it to their children and retired. Peter passed away in 1973 and in 1975 Helen married Alex Syrotiuk. They lived in Winnipeg until his retirement and then returned to Gypsumville where they had happy years together. Helen is survived by her children, Richard, Joyce (Allan) and David (Kathy); her grandchildren, Jason, Scott, Darka, David, Terri (Mark), Wendy (Jamie) and Jeffrey (Jen); great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Kylie, Sara, Brooklynn and Carter; sisters-in-law, Jeannette Ewasiuk, Olga Shabaga, Nellie Karlow, Francis Shabaga, Rhoda Shabaga, Pat Bergner and Josephine Paley; brothers-in-law, William Shabaga, Walter Syrotiuk, Nester Syrotiuk and Eugene Syrotiuk, along with many nieces, nephews and many good family friends. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10 at the Gypsumville Community Hall, with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Interment to follow in the Gypsumville Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations can be made to the Gypsumville Community Church, in care of Edna Fowke, P.O. Box 18, St. Martin, MB R0C 2T0 or to the Ashern Personal Care Home, P.O. Box 110, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0 where Helen spent the last 10 years of her life and was treated with the utmost respect, care and love.
