Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALEXANDER (ALEX) TAYLOR Of Dartmouth, NS passed away peacefully on November 22, 2008 his 87th birthday. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1921 and emigrated with his parents, Alex and Mary Taylor to Transcona in 1923. In 1941, he followed his father into police work and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. At the time of his retirement from the force in 1966, he was the senior NCO in the Criminal Investigations Branch at HQ in Halifax. Afterwards, he set up and administered the new Family Court for Halifax County. From 1968 to 1981 he was the Director of Police and Security for the Port of Halifax. Alex was an active member of Woodlawn United Church, Kiwanis, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the RCMP Veterans Association. During his lifetime he was keenly interested in sports and particularly loved coaching hockey. His interest in hockey was nurtured during his youth in Transcona at the Maple Leaf Community Club. Alex is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy, sons David (Wendy) and Mark (Melissa), and daughters Maureen (Paul) MacDonald and Shelagh (Fred) Crooks and eight grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister Maureen Sheldon of Transcona. Alex was predeceased by his father Alex Taylor in 1961, his mother Mary (Kane) Taylor in 1982 and his sister Kathleen Blaikie in June 2008. A service to celebrate his life was held at Woodlawn United Church in Dartmouth, on Wednesday, November 26th.
