Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN (JACK) ALEXANDER THOMPSON May 27, 1920 March 12, 2009 John passed away at the age of 88 at the Penticton Regional Hospital. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife Ida; son Ross (Dougi); daughter Patricia; stepson Rick; grandchildren, Patrick, Ainsley, Dean, Deborah and Keri and five beautiful great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Betty and former wife Edna. John was born and raised in Winnipeg. During the Second World War he enlisted in the Canadian Navy and was stationed in Victoria, BC where he served on a frigate patrolling Canada's west coast. Upon his return to Winnipeg in 1945, John entered the family business where his natural ability in landscape and golf course design emerged. Following the sale of his business, John went to work for the Manitoba Government, Department of Tourism, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. It was there that, among many other accomplishments, he developed the Hecla Island Golf Course, recognized to this day as one of the top courses in Canada. In 1978 he and Ida moved to Regina where his reputation as a landscape and golf course designer continued to flourish during his years with the City's Parks and Recreation Department. Upon retirement, John established the very successful John A. Thompson Golf Course Design and Consulting firm, designing and developing golf courses in all three prairie provinces. As snowbirds, John and Ida enjoyed many winters at their home in Yuma, AZ. When in later years John could no longer travel, they moved to Summerland, BC where they have resided since 2002. They cherish the many friends they've made throughout their journey. In accordance with John's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. Thank you to everyone who has provided such wonderful support and assistance during this difficult time. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Providence Funeral Homes. Condolences may be directed to the family: summerlandfuneralhome@vip.net.
